NAD Leadership Announces Transition to Virtual Office in Response to COVID-19

Due to the rapidly-changing situation with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the administration of the North American Division (NAD) has elected to transition its corporate office in Columbia, Maryland, to a virtual operation. Starting at the end of business on March 17, 2020, and moving forward until March 30, 2020, all employees will be required to work from home, and all efforts are being made to ensure that day-to-day operations will continue without interruption.

The leadership of the North American Division of the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (NAD), in consultation with the leaders of the nine union conferences in the NAD, is providing some guidance for the churches and schools in our territories regarding the impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

NAD Administration Shares Information Regarding COVID-19 and Division Response

On March 4, 2020, during the North American Division monthly staff meeting, NAD administration invited Tim Northrop, president of Adventist Risk Management, and Dr. Peter Landless, Health Ministries director of the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, to present on what the church is doing in regard to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The division also shared work-related updates with employees.

North American Division to Cancel 2020 Pathfinder Bible Experience

After consultation with North American Division (NAD) administration, the youth directors of the nine unions in the NAD, additional consultation from local Oregon health officials, and a discussion and vote from the NAD Executive Committee (NADCOM), the NAD Youth Department is announcing the cancellation of the division-level 2020 Pathfinder Bible Experience (PBE) scheduled for April 17-18, 2020, in Salem, Oregon.

Walla Walla University announced Wednesday night, Feb. 26, at a faculty and staff meeting that it will reduce its faculty and staff workforce as part of a broad-based effort to preserve the university’s financial position. Reductions are part of a university strategy, which will be complemented with other improvement initiatives to support ongoing efforts in order to effectively manage employment and operational costs.

Gulf States Conference to Debut New Community Service Vehicle

The Gulf States Conference of Seventh-day Adventists will be holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, at 11 a.m. at the Dothan First Seventh-day Adventist Church located at 147 Picard St., Dothan, Alabama. The ceremony will celebrate the launch of a new community service and disaster response trailer, “Shower+Laundry.”

Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada Elects Paul Llewellyn as Executive Secretary/Vice-President

On Dec. 10, 2019, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada Board of Directors elected Paul Llewellyn as the next executive secretary/vice-president for administration. Llewellyn will begin his duties as of Jan. 1, 2020. He most recently served as Maritime Conference president.

U.S. Department of Justice Urges Supreme Court to Hear Adventist's Sabbath Accommodation Case

The U.S. Department of Justice on Monday, December 9, 2019, urged the Supreme Court to hear a case brought by Darrell Patterson who was fired by Walgreens for refusing to work on the Sabbath. The Supreme Court will consider Patterson’s petition on January 10, 2020. If the court agrees to hear the matter, it will issue a ruling by the end of June 2020.
