1. Storm Interrupts International Pathfinder Camporee, Displaces Some Campers

The 2024 International Pathfinder Camporee at the CAM-PLEX Multi-Event Facilities canceled its Tuesday night program due to thunderstorms that brought heavy rains and lightning. Shortly before 6 p.m. MT on August 6, campers were evacuated from tents and moved inside buildings for shelter from the storm, which produced strong wind gusts.

More than 60,000 young people, hailing from more than 100 countries, will set up a tent and RV city August 5-11, 2024, as they attend the Ninth International Pathfinder Camporee at the CAM-PLEX Facilities in Gillette, Wyoming.

4. Pentecost 2025 Initiative Voted by the North American Division Executive Committee

On May 29, 2024, the North American Division Executive Committee has voted to approve Pentecost 2025, an initiative to be launched for church leaders and members alike to seek the Holy Spirit’s power and mobilize for evangelism with the goal of holding at least 3,000 proclamation initiatives division wide in 2025. Starting in July, Adventists with approval from their church board can sign up to be part of Pentecost 2025, with the option to apply for startup funds.

5. The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada Announces New Contract with Christian Record Services

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada is pleased to announce a new three-year contract with Christian Record Services to provide services to members who are blind and visually impaired. This partnership, effective from 2025 to 2027, will enhance the quality of life for many individuals across Canada.

6. North American Division President Responds to Shooting at Adventist Elementary School in California

This is the response by the North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church President to the December 4, 2024, shooting incident at the Feather River Seventh-day Adventist School and statement of the Northern California Conference.

7. International Pathfinder Camporee Announces Decision to End Nighttime Program a Day Early Due to Weather-Related Concerns

On Thursday evening, Aug. 8, 2024, the decision was made to conclude the International Pathfinder Camporee (IPC) earlier than expected. Camporee leadership published an announcement in the early morning hours on Aug. 9, after announcing the decision to attendees the previously night after the nighttime program.

8. Oakwood University President to Take on New Role at the North American Division

On Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, the Oakwood University Board of Trustees announced that Leslie N. Pollard, Ph.D., has accepted a new position with the North America Division. In a statement, Oakwood University shared that Pollard has accepted a new opportunity to join the North American Division as assistant to the president for pastoral continuing education and mission, commencing July 1.

9. New Children’s Sabbath School Curriculum to Roll Out in January 2025

Sabbath Schools in Seventh-day Adventist churches around the world will see a big change as the Alive in Jesus curriculum launches in January 2025, with the roll out of materials for babies (birth through 12 months) and beginners (1-3 years). The rollout will continue for the next three years for age groups kindergarten and primary (2026), followed by junior and teen (projected for 2027), and youth (projected for 2028). 

10. Oakwood University Emerges as the New National Champion at the 35th Honda Campus All-Star Challenge

Oakwood University has emerged as the new national champion at the 35th Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) held on April 12, 2024. The Alabama-based university defeated 31 other teams to take home the title and a $100,000 institutional grant. Howard University, Spelman College, and Morehouse College finished in the top four.

Wanting to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest setup of a four-person tent at the International Pathfinder Camporee in Gillette, Wyo., this summer, members of the Southern Asian Church Seventh-day Adventist Church (SASDAC) Sentinels Pathfinder Club in Silver Spring, Maryland, were disappointed when the planned competition didn’t take place.
