The 2018 Andrews University Social Consciousness Summit is taking place from April 4–7 on the university campus in Berrien Springs, Michigan. The event focuses on the theme “The Legacy of Dr. King: Are We Living the Dream?”

The summit begins today, April 4, with a Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative Prayer Vigil from 6:30-8 p.m. in Newbold Auditorium, Buller Hall. Renowned orator Troy Patterson Thomas will reenact a number of King’s most notable speeches. The evening will also incorporate reflections on the legacy and life of King from community guests, including Congressman Fred Upton.

Throughout the summit, sessions will feature speakers Jason O’Rourke, chaplain at Florida Hospital, and Claudia Allen, PhD student at the University of Maryland, as well as a film screening and panel discussions.

The summit will conclude with participation in Pioneer Memorial Church’s Day of Prayer, “Against the Strongholds.” Time will be dedicated to praying against the strongholds that continue to prevent King’s vision of racial equity and economic and social justice from being truly realized.

“The Social Consciousness Summit will give our campus, as well as our larger community, opportunity to reflect on the legacy that Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King has left behind, as well as our role—individually and collectively—in fulfilling it,” says Michael Nixon, vice president for Diversity & Inclusion. “We welcome you all to join us as we come together for this important time of reflection, discussion and collaboration as we seek to continue Dr. King’s legacy of truth telling, non-violent protest and advocacy.”
