===================================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, July 4, 1998 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: June 1, 1998 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, WATER FLOWS FROM A ROCK ===================================================================== Lesson Aim: God knows what I need and gives it to me. Memory Verse: "His bread will be supplied, and water will not fail him." Isaiah 33:16, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - ROD RELAY Materials needed: A broom handle, dowel stick or tree branch (the size of a broom handle) 2 sheets of plain white paper WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Write the word, START on one of the sheets of paper and the word FINISH on the other. Tape one sheet of paper to one wall and the other across the room on another wall. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: This activity is a relay. The object is for the children to get the rod from the start to the finish. You may choose whether or not to make it a timed race depending on the age and abilities of your students. Beginning at the start, place a student every 4-5 feet in a straight row or curved line (depending on your room size) toward the finish. The last child will be a couple feet from the finish paper. Give the first child at the start the stick or broom handle. Ask them the question, "What good is a stick like this? How can it be useful?" When he gives an answer, he runs to the next child in line, handing him the stick. The second child in line gives an answer and runs to the third child in line, handing him the stick. The game continues in this fashion. The object is to think of enough useful ways to use the stick, so that it is passed all the way to the end of the line to the child at the finish. No answers may be repeated. Children who have given an answer may act as "coaches" for the remaining players. "Coaches" may whisper an idea to a player who requests help. The player, not the coach, must say the answer out loud. When the game is over, follow it up with the discussion questions: 1. How many ways did we think of where the stick was useful by itself? 2. How many ways did we think of where the stick was used by someone to be useful? 2. From our Bible story, can you think of a way God used a stick or rod to help some people in need? GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - RHYTHM RHYME Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Practice repeating the following rhyme using the hand rhythm, slap, clap, snap as suggested. Slap the top of your thighs, clap hands together, snap fingers. (Slap, clap, snap) (For example: When you say the word, moving, you should be slapping. When you say the word, on, you should be clapping, and when you say the word, again, you should be snapping. There is a rhythm for every word. Words are purposely left out at the end of verses for the children to fill in. Their word should rhyme with the last word of the previous sentence. Possible answers appear in parenthesis. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Tell the children you are going to review the Bible story with them using a rhythm rhyme. Show them how to begin the rhythm. (Slap, clap, snap). First you say a line, then they repeat it after you. At the end of each verse when you come to a blank, they contribute a word that rhymes. Do the first verse as a sample, then continue on through the rest of the rhyme. Set up a place for each child that includes a plate, sandwich bag, knife and three slices of bread. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Have the children look up the memory verse in their Bibles and read it together with you. Put the Bibles aside. Instruct each child to cut their three slices of bread into 12 squares by cutting each piece in half and then in half again. Have them lay their squares in front of their plates. Using the knife, they spread a thin layer of peanut butter on one bread square. Then they lay another bread square on top making a sandwich. This sandwich represents "His bread" from the memory verse. On bread square number 3 spread a thin layer of cream cheese and top with another bread square. This sandwich represents "will be" from the memory verse. On bread square number 5 spread a thin layer of jelly. Top with a bread square. This third sandwich represents "supplied" from the memory verse. Continue in this manner until each child has made six square sandwiches. Using the sandwiches as a visual reminder review the memory verse until each child can say it. Discuss what other needs God wants to provide besides our daily food. Encourage the children to take their sandwiches home in their bags. When they share them with their family and friends, they can also share the good news about God and His care for each of them. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - FILL UP THE CUP Materials needed: Poster board, newsprint pad or write on/wipe off board Markers WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Draw an outline of a cup. (The dimensions will depend upon the size of your Sabbath School. Before deciding, consult the directions below as to how it is used.) WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Ask the children to think of all the things God has given them or done for them that they needed. Each time a child volunteers an idea he may come and write it in the inside of the cup. (Younger children will use different colored markers to color portions instead of writing ideas as they work their way up the glass.) The object of the activity is to fill the glass up to the brim with ideas. (That's why the size of the cup drawing depends on how many children are participating in the activity.) If there are more ideas after the glass is full, write them as overflowing from the glass. Emphasize God's goodness in caring for all our needs.
