===================================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, June 6, 1998 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: April 30, 1998 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, GOD HELPS MOSES ===================================================================== Lesson Aim: God will help me do the things He asks me to do. Memory Verse: I will help you speak and will teach you what to say." Exo. 4:12, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - FEAR BAGS Materials needed: One brown grocery bag for each child Markers WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There is no advance preparation necessary WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Give each child a brown paper bag. Instruct them to draw the face of someone who is afraid or very fearful. Collect the markers. Explain to the children that you are going to read them some sentences about fearful things. If it is something they have experienced, they are to put the grocery bag down over their head with the fearful face they have drawn facing out. They remove it before you go on to the next statement. Inform the children that the statements tell about times when you want to do something, or you know you have to do something, but you are afraid. Have you ever had to meet someone important for the first time? If so, put the bag over your head. Have you ever had to play an instrument in a recital? If so, put the bag over your head. Have you ever had to memorize and say a part in a play? If so, put the bag over your head. Have you ever had to play in a championship ball game? If so, put the bag over your head. Have you ever had to apologize to someone who was very angry with you? If so, put the bag over your head. Have you ever had to jump off the diving board or swim the length of a pool by yourself? If so, put the bag over your head. Collect the bags and follow up this activity with the following questions: Did you realize there are so many times to be fearful? I'm sure you could think of a lot more! What do we sometimes want to do when we feel afraid? (Hide) In our story today, Moses wants to do something for God. He feels he has to do it because God has asked him to. But he is afraid. Let's see if God will provide him with the courage to overcome his fear. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - STORY DOMINO Materials needed: (25) 3 X 5 cards Permanent marker WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Print the following words on 3 X 5 cards, one word to a card: ROD, SNAKE, HAND, LEPROSY, NILE RIVER, BLOOD, AARON, SPOKESMAN, MOUNT SINAI, TEN COMMANDMENTS, PHARAOH, HARD-HEARTED, STRAW, BRICKS, TASKMASTERS, SLAVE BOSSES, ISRAELITES, COMPLAINERS, GOD, DELIVERER, REDEEMER, MAGICIANS, TRICKS, TRUST, COURAGE. Use a black marker and print in large capital letters. Shuffle the cards very well. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: There are two different ways to play the domino game. If you have a small group (10 or less), pass out the 3 X 5 cards until there are none left. Explain to the children that the cards are like dominos. A card cannot be laid down unless it matches the card that has been placed last. Tell the Bible story using the quarterly. Whenever a child hears a word mentioned that is written on one of his cards he may bring it to the front and lay it on the floor. One side has to be touching a side of the previously laid domino. The dominos may change direction and take any path the children choose. Make sure and review ahead of time how you will tell the story so that it will include all the above words. The second way to play the game involves a larger group of 25 children or more. Instead of using 3 X 5 cards, print the words on post-its. Stick a post-it on each child. The dominoes will be the children themselves. When their word is mentioned, they stand next to the child with the previous word. They may face any direction. Whatever direction they face is the direction the human domino line takes. Again, review how to tell the story including all the above words. At the end of the game review the concept that God gave Moses the courage to do what He wanted him to do. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - PHONE MESSAGE PAD Materials needed: 10 squares of white paper, 4" wide by 5" tall for each child Colored construction paper Ruler Stapler Bibles Stickers Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut out 10 squares of white paper, 4" wide by 5" tall for each child. Assemble the rest of the supplies on a flat work surface. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Explain to the children that there are many times when they will need courage to say the right words. It may be words of encouragement. It may be words of forgiveness. It may even be words of correction. There may be times when they will need the courage to not say any words at all. Look up the memory verse in the Bible together. Talk about how God gives us the wisdom to know what to speak and when to speak. Have each child choose a color of construction paper. Draw a 4 1/2" by 5 1/2" square on their construction paper and instruct them to cut it out. On the construction paper square each child neatly prints the memory verse including text. Stickers can be added as desired. Give each child 10 squares of white paper. Have them staple their construction paper cover to the top of the white sheets. Encourage them to take the phone message pad home and place it by the telephone that is most frequently used. Talk about other times besides the phone when God will help us when we speak. (Face to face, up front etc.) Review the verse several times to commit it to memory. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - COURAGE CUPS Materials needed: Large white styro foam cup for each child Permanent markers Stencils Bibles Poster Board WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Print the following texts on the poster board. Use the New International Version of the Bible. Matthew 10:19, 20 Ex.. 4:12 Luke 21:14, 15 Eph. 6:19 WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Assign the above texts, so that each child in the class has one text to look up. The number of children that look up any given text is not important. Select one child to read the text from a New International Bible while the rest follow along. At the conclusion of each reading, ask the children what the text is about. (God giving us the words we need to speak at the right time.) Close the Bibles and display the printed texts on the poster board. Ask the children to select the one that they want to remember as their special promise for this week. Pass out a styro foam cup to each child. Using the permanent markers, have them print the text neatly on the cup. (Children who choose the longer texts will need help printing) Guide the children in using the stencils to color designs on the remaining blank portions of the cup. Encourage the children to take the cup home and keep it in a prominent place during the week where they will remember to use it whenever they drink. Whenever we open our mouths we need to have a prayer on our lips that Jesus will help us to know the right words to say.
