===================================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, June 13, 1998 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: April 30, 1998 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, TEN CHANCES TO OBEY ===================================================================== Lesson Aim: Sometimes scary things happen in the world, but I can trust that God is in charge and will work things out in a way that is best for me. Memory Verse: "No harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent." Psa. 91:10, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - RINGERS Materials needed: Clay or play-doh 10 brand new pencils 10 paper plates (dessert size) Scissors Small slip of paper for each child WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Form ten stakes by rolling play doh into a mound and stabbing the pencil down through it. Set the "stakes" approximately one foot apart in a horizontal row. Press the dough around the base of the mound firmly to the floor so the "stake" stays upright. Cut the middles out of all 10 paper plates so only the ridged disk is left. Print the number one on all but one of the slips of paper. On the remaining slip, print the number 10. Fold all the slips of paper several times so the number cannot be seen. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Give each child a slip of paper. Instruct them to keep their paper folded shut and not to look at it until it is their turn. (Make sure the child with the number 10 is last in line) Line them up in a vertical row approximately five feet from the stakes. Explain to them that when it is their turn, they are to look at their paper. The number on the paper tells them how many chances they have to make a ringer on one of the stakes. (The paper plates are the rings) When the children find out that the last child in line has ten chances of making ringers, they will undoubtedly proclaim how unfair it is. When the last child's turn is over follow up the activity with the discussion questions. (Don't get rid of the stakes and ringers. They are used later on in the program) 1. Do you like to have a few chances or a lot of chances to do something? 2. Do you like it when someone says, "I'll give you one more chance?" 3. How many chances does Pharaoh have to admit that God is in charge and he has to obey Him? Let's find out. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - PLAGUE PROBLEMS Materials needed: Stakes and rings from previous activity Permanent markers Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary except for setting the stakes used in the previous activity in various locations throughout the room. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Divide the students into ten small groups. Give them a paper ring and assign them a stake to stand by. (Smaller Sabbath schools may assign one child to each stake. A child can be in charge of more than more stake if necessary). Give each group at a stake one of the following texts to locate. They are to discover the plague God sent upon the Egyptians within that verse and write it on the ring in big bold letters. (Most are only one word) Then they decide together what action they will do to portray that particular plague to the rest of the group. They are to select one action and the whole group does that one action. (For example - scratch head for lice, hop for frogs etc.) Re-assemble as a large group and begin visiting the stakes in order as they occur by verse. When the action is guessed, they group can hang their ring from their stake. Everyone then proceeds on to the next stake. Follow up the review of the lesson with the following discussion questions: 1. What do you think about the plagues that were sent to Pharaoh and the Egyptians? 2. Would you be afraid if those kinds of things happened to you or near you? 3. What helps you feel better when scary things happen around you? 4. Where is God during those times? Sometimes big people like moms, dad, teachers and friends forget that God is with them even during scary times. Can you help someone remember this week that God cares about them and they can trust Him, even if they're going through a scary time? Texts to be used with this activity: Ex. 7:20 Ex. 8:6 Ex. 8:17 Ex. 8:24 Ex. 9:6 Ex. 9:11 Ex. 9:23 Ex. 10:13 Ex. 10:22 Ex. 11:5 GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE PASSWORD Materials needed: Chalkboard OR write on/wipe off board OR newsprint pad Clues (found below) Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Print the necessary blanks for the memory verse on the board. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Give the children one to two word clues for each of the words of the memory verse. Suggested clues follow. (Make up your own if desired) Explain to the children that the clue word may be an opposite, rhyming or describing word for one of the missing words. (For example: If the missing word is right, I might say wrong. If the missing word is right, I might say tight. If the missing word is right, I might say direction.) Call for a volunteer to select one of the missing words from on the chalkboard. Give the clue. Anyone may guess the answer. Continue in this manner until all of the memory verse has been filled in. Look up the text in the Bible together and review it several times to commit it to memory. Clue word for "no" - "yes" Clue word for "harm" - "farm" Clue word for "will" - "still" Clue word for "befall" - "honey" + "slip" Clue word for "you" - "After T" Clue word for "no" - "row" Clue word for "disaster" - "terrible happening" Clue word for "will" - "won't" Clue word for "come" - "go" Clue word for "near" - "far" Clue word for "your" - "four" Clue word for "tent" - "camp shelter" ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - POM-POM PALS Materials needed: Medium-size colored pom-pom balls or balls of cotton Wiggly eyes or permanent markers Construction paper (several sheets) Glue Magnetic tape WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: The object of the activity is for the students to make pom-pom pals to share with people they meet during the week who seem to be going through an especially difficult or scary time. Before passing out the supplies for assembling, ask the children the following questions. 1. Do you think scary situations happen to all people? Tell me some you can think of. 2. Because of God's love and grace to us, what does He send us to help us during those scary times? (Assurance of His love and presence; patience; guidance to know what to do etc.) Lots of times people need reminded of this when they're going through a difficult time. Let's make pom-pom pals to share with them to help them remember. Help the children choose several colored pom-pom balls or white balls of cotton. The white cotton balls can be decorated with markers. Glue on wiggly eyes or draw on with a permanent marker. Trace large "clown"like shoe feet onto the construction paper for children to cut out. Pom-pom is glued on top the heel part of the shoe so the large toes are sticking out in front. Help children copy or trace the following words onto the feet. "Let God walk with you."
