===================================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, December 18, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: November 1, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, MOSES AND ELIJAH VISIT EARTH ===================================================================== Lesson Aim: God supplies my needs to help my faith grow. Memory Verse: "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" Matt. 17:5, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - CHEER-UP CHOICES Materials needed: Artist's drawing paper Pastels or watercolors Smocks or old shirts WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Give the children a sheet of paper, pastels or watercolors and an old shirt or smock to cover up with. Ask them to spend a few moments thinking about something they would do for a friend who needed cheering up or who needed extra courage. Have them illustrate themselves doing it, then share with one another their ideas. In our Bible story today Jesus' special disciple friends needed cheering up. They needed something that would give them courage to face some terrible days ahead. Let's see the special thing God did for them. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE DRAMATIZATION Materials needed: Overhead projector White sheet Bathroom curtain rod or other pole of similar length Safety pins (several) Tape recorder with cassette recording of male voice repeating the memory verse WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Drape the sheet over a shower curtain rod or other pole. Fasten with safety pins. Hang the sheet between two tall objects so that it is off the floor. It cannot be fastened to a wall because Elijah, Moses and Jesus have to stand behind it. Set-up the overhead projector so it casts a light on the sheet. Make the tape of a male voice repeating the memory verse. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Select the children to mime out the following characters: Peter, James, John, Jesus, Moses & Elijah. If there are not enough children in your group, ask adults from the congregation to play the roles of Jesus, Moses & Elijah. If the group is large, have more children play the roles of the disciples. However, explain that according to the story only three disciples were with Jesus at this time. Have the disciples trudge up the mountain. Have them kneel several feet back from the lighted wall as if in prayer, then have them fall asleep. While they are "sleeping" place the Elijah, Moses & Jesus actors behind the sheet. Have them be conversing with one another, making hand gestures, patting Jesus on the shoulder, pointing to Heaven etc. Have the disciples wake-up and watch the action behind the sheet Have the pre-recorded deep male voice say the words of the memory verse. Turn off the overhead projector. Have Jesus come out from behind the sheet and re-join the disciples. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE I.D. CARD Materials needed: Colored card stock paper (a heavier paper than construction paper or regular paper) Pictures of Jesus (cut from magazines and old quarterlies) Clear contact paper Scissors Glue sticks Pens Student I.D. card (optional) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut each child a 2 X 2 piece of colored card stock. Cut 2 pieces of contact paper for each child measuring 2 « X 2 « . WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Show the children what a student I.D. card looks like. If one is not available use your driver's license. Why do we carry I.D. cards? We use them to prove we really are who we say we are. Besides needing them for driving, licenses are used in the same way, as proof of who we are. In our memory verse today, God wanted the disciples to know without any doubt that Jesus belonged to Him. He was His Son. He spoke the memory verse words as proof. Have the children make an I.D. card for Jesus. They choose a picture of Jesus and glue it onto a piece of colored card stock. They then copy the memory verse onto the card stock also. Last, cover each side of the card stock with the pieces of clear contact paper. (Lamination works nicely if that is available at your church.) Now that they know and believe who Jesus is, they need to share this information with others this week. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - GUESS THAT ENCOURAGEMENT Materials needed: Write-on/wipe-off board OR black board Appropriate writing mediums WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Explain to the children that this game is similar to Wheel of Fortune. The answers are ways Jesus sometimes uses to encourage us when we need it. Write the alphabet across the top of the board. Select one of the words below and write enough blanks across the board to accommodate the word. Let the children take turns guessing missing letters. As they guess correctly, fill in the missing letter. As soon as they know the answer move on to the next word. ANSWER WORDS: SONGS(Jesus might call to your mind a particular song that will encourage you.) STORY(Jesus might call to your mind a particular story you heard that will encourage you.) FRIEND(Jesus might use a particular friend to speak words of encouragement to you.) PRAYER(Jesus might help you to feel extra peaceful during your prayer time.) MIRACLE(Jesus might actually work a miracle in your life that will encourage you.)
