======================================================= Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, December 2, 2,000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: November 15, 2,000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, SHIPWRECKED ======================================================= Lesson Aim: God will help me and give me courage when I need it. Memory Verse: "He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him." Psa. 91:15, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - SENSORY SHIPWRECK Materials needed: 3 pieces of poster board Scissors Markers WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Draw a ship on each poster board. (Similar to the one on p. 40 of the quarterly) Draw it large enough to take up most of the poster board. Cut each ship out and mount them on three different walls in the classroom. Mount them at a level where Primary children can reach and write on them. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Ask the children to imagine they are on a ship that has wrecked. What would they see? What would they hear? What would they feel? Designate one ship has the one they write their answers as to what they would see on. Designate a second poster board ship as the one they write what they would hear. The third ship they write things they would feel. They rotate around, writing as many answers as they can think of, regardless of whether that answer has been written by someone else or not. Some ideas are: SEE - waves, white caps, sea creatures, wood, sail, parts of ship floating, bodies etc. HEAR - screaming, shouting, creaking, splintering wood, splashing etc. FEEL - cold, wet, scared, petrified, frightened, seasick, etc. In our Bible story today there is a shipwreck. Probably many of the people on the boat had the same feelings as we have described on our ships. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - STORMS ON THE WATER Materials needed: Bible times dress-up clothes OR bathrobes Props to go with the following stories: Noah and the ark Jonah Jesus calms the storm Paul shipwrecked Large trash bags to put the props in Large piece of styrofoam or board Brown paint WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut a large piece of styrofoam or board into a boat shape. Paint it brown. Use it as the main prop for the storm stories. Place all the props in trash bags. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Divide the children into groups. Assign each group one of the above stories. Have them gather their props from the trash bags. After each story is acted out by the group, talk about God's care and deliverance. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE FRAME Materials needed: 8 twigs for each child (all approximately 6" in length but 4 can be thick and 4 thinner in diameter) 4 heavy rubber bands for each child Ivory colored card stock paper (cut each child a piece measuring 6" X 4") Hot glue gun and glue sticks 2" of raffia or ribbon for each child Chalk board OR write-on/wipe-off board WHAT THE TEACHER DOES" (To prepare ahead) Print or type the memory verse onto each child's ivory colored card stock paper. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: The twigs are going to be arranged in a square to make a frame. 1. Lay a thick twig and a thin twig side by side horizontally approximately 4" apart. 2. Lay a thick twig and a thin twig side by side vertically on top of the horizontal twigs near the ends. 3. Secure the horizontal and vertical twigs together with the rubber bands at the ends. 4. Hot glue the memory verse paper to the back of the frame, so the words show through the "window" of the frame. 5. Glue the piece of raffia or ribbon to the back of the frame for hanging. 6. Look up the memory verse in the Bible. Read and repeat it several times together. Write it on the board. Choose words to erase one at a time while continuing to repeat the verse. Do this until the whole verse can be said by memory. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - BOARDWALK TO SAFETY Materials needed: Boat shape (from Getting Into Scripture activity) Five boards (strong enough for a child to walk on; light enough for a child to pick-up) Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Place the boat shape at the front of the room. Place all five boards at the side of the boat. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Have the students look up the memory verse in the Bible. Read and repeat it together several times. Show the children how the memory verse is divided into four parts at the commas and semi-colons. The first child gets behind the boat. The object is for him/her to get from the boat to the island (their chairs) by using the boards and planks to walk on. Each board represents one of the sections of the memory verse. After the child says, "He will call upon me" he lays the first board down leading away from the boat. He then can climb out on it and stand. After saying, "...and I will answer him;..."he may lay the second board in front of the one he is standing on. He then steps onto that one. This continues until he has used up all five of the boards and has reached the island of chairs safely. (The fifth board is the text) All the boards are then put back by the boat and another child may try.
