===================================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, November 14, 1998 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: September 15, 1998 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, GOD ANSWERS HANNAH'S PRAYER ===================================================================== Lesson Aim: I can pray to God about anything that worries me. Memory Verse: "Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right." Proverbs 20:11, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - BODY RHYMES Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Pair the children off into twos. (If you have an odd number, you can be a partner). Tell the children they are going to think of things people do when they want something real bad. Sometimes we can't always have what we want right away and we do things to try and get it. Tell the partners to face each other. You are going to give them clues. After they answer the clue they have to make contact with their partner on the body part mentioned in the clue. They may use their hand, leg, head, elbow, knee whatever as long as they make contact in some way with the body part mentioned. (Hint: Their answers need to rhyme with the last word in the clue. 1. Sometimes people do this when they want something. It rhymes with leg. (Beg) (Both partners make some type of contact with the other person's leg.) 2. Sometimes people do this when they want something. It rhymes with snout. (Pout) (Both partners make some type of contact with the other person's nose.) 3. Sometimes people do this when they want something. It rhymes with ears. (Shed tears) (Both partners make some type of contact with the other person's ear.) 4. Sometimes people do this when they want something. It rhymes with heel. (Make a deal) (Both partners make some type of contact with the other person's heel.) 5. Sometimes people do this when they want something. It rhymes with eye. (Save & buy) (Both partners make some type of contact with the other person's eye.) Say, "What a predicament you are in. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where begging, pouting, crying, buying and making deals won't work. In our Bible story today, Hannah is in one of these predicaments." GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - SAMUEL'S BABY BOOK Materials needed: 8 sheets of plain white paper 8 sheets of light blue construction paper Scissors Glue Colored pencils 1 12" piece of fabric ribbon 2 pieces of cardboard (like from a cereal box) cut the same size as the construction paper 2 brass fasteners Hot glue gun WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Write one of the following statements at the top of each sheet of plain white paper. 1. This is my mommy, Hannah & daddy, Elkanah. Mommy is sad because I have not been born. 2. This is my mommy praying for me at the tabernacle. 3. This is me right after I was born. My name on my little bed means, "asked of God". 4. This is my mommy and me learning about God. 5. This is my daddy and me walking in nature. 6. This is a picture of me arriving at the tabernacle to live with Priest Eli. 7. This is my mommy saying a special prayer for me. 8. This is me trying on one of my new coats mommy brought to me every year. In big blocked letters print the words, Samuel's Baby Book on one of the pieces of cardboard. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Ask the children if they have a baby book at home. Why do parents make baby books? (Because they want to remember everything their precious children did while growing up.) Tell the children they will make a baby book for Samuel. He did not live at home very long, so probably his mother wanted to remember every little thing about him. Give each child a piece of the plain white paper with the captions written at the top. They are to draw an illustration in the middle that fits the caption. Remind them that it is a baby book, so they will want to do careful, artistic work. Give each child a piece of blue construction paper. Have them cut their illustration out in an interesting way and mount it onto the construction paper. Put the pages in order laying the Samuel's Baby Book cover on top and the other cardboard piece on the bottom as a backing. Punch two holes on the left-hand side and fasten the book together with two brass fasteners. Make a bow with the fabric ribbon and hot glue it to the top of the cover. Display the book in a prominent place in church for others to enjoy. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE GROWTH CHART Materials needed: Buy a growth chart or make one Marking pens Bibles Current picture or snapshot of each child in the class (For future use, doesn't have to be available for this program.) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Tape a growth chart to one of the walls. Make sure it is at a level where each child will be able to reach it. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Measure each child on the growth chart and write their name beside their measurement. Look up the memory verse in the Bible. Explain that no matter what size you are you can be trusted by God to live for Him. Repeat the verse several times together. Tell the children that you will call out one of their height measurements from the growth chart. Whoever is recorded at that height runs to the chart, stands with his back to it and repeats the first portion of the memory verse. (Even a child is known by his actions). After you call the second measurement out the child who measured that height will run to the chart, stand with his back to it and repeat the second portion of the verse. (By whether his conduct is pure and right). Continue playing in this manner until all children have had an opportunity to say both parts of the verse. As a follow-up, place the children's pictures beside their measurements and write the memory verse somewhere on the chart. Leave hanging for the rest of the quarter or longer. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - SHARING PICTURE Materials needed: 3 X 5 cards (2-3 for each child) Stickers Clothes pins (2-3 for each child) Magnetic tape Hot glue gun WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On each 3 X 5 card print the following verse. If your Sabbath school is large, print the verse on plain paper, xerox it, cut it out and glue it onto the 3 X 5 cards. Leave room for pretty stickers along the sides of the card. Sometimes you feel like pouting Sometimes you want to cry You want to beg and whine a bit And ask God, "why can't I?" Instead of all this fussing Try praying in its place And God in all His wisdom Will give you peace and grace WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Read the verse together with the students. Help them realize that children and adults alike get discouraged and fussy when they don't get what they want. Instruct them to decorate the 3 X 5 cards with stickers. Hot glue the 3 X 5 card to a clothes pin and stick a piece of magnetic tape on the back of the clothes pin. Encourage them to share these refrigerator reminders with people this week who seem to be particularly struggling with this problem of having to wait for something.
