===================================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, October 23, 1999 From: NAD Children’s Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: September 15, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, JESUS’ WONDERFUL SERMON ===================================================================== Lesson Aim: Jesus wants me to act toward others like I want them to act toward me. Memory Verse: “Do to others what you would have them do to you.” Matt. 7:12, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - WISE/ FOOLISH MAN OBJECT LESSON Materials needed: Construction paper Scissors Tape Rocks (12 about the size of half dollars) Sand (approximately four cups) Pitchers or buckets (2-3) Water WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Find a place outside to conduct the following object lesson. Divide the children into three groups. Keep the groups as equal in number as possible. Group one call the house builders. Group two call the foundation builders and group three call the flood makers. Have group one work together to construct two square paper houses out of the construction paper. Supply them with scissors and tape also. Group two works together to make two separate foundations. One will be made by piling up rocks, but it will need to have a flat spot on top for the house to sit on. The other will be made by pouring the sand into a tall pile, flattening it at the top so a house can sit on it. Group three will need to fill their pitchers or buckets with water. After the house builders are finished place the houses on the rock and sand foundations. Have the flood makers try and wash them away by pouring their “rain water” altogether from one side across the bottom of the foundation. (NO WATER CAN BE POURED STRAIGHT DOWN FROM THE TOP) Discuss the results. Even if the house on the sand does not fall completely flat ask the children to predict what will happen. (It will crumble before the house on the rocks) In our story today Jesus says that people who listen to His words and obey them are like the house on the rocks. They have a better chance of standing firm when troubles come. People who hears Jesus’ words but choose not to obey are like the house on the sand. They give up and fall apart when any problems arise. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY PUZZLE Materials needed: (6) pieces of poster board Gold spray paint Scotch tape Old Kindergarten and Cradle Roll quarterlies and Little Friends Scissors Glue sticks WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut each poster board into the shape of a puzzle piece complete with notches and holes. On each puzzle piece spray paint the memory verse words in the following order: Left-hand top piece - Do Left-hand middle piece - to others Right-hand top piece - what you Left-hand bottom piece - would have Middle bottom piece - them do Right-hand bottom piece - to you After the paint is dry pull the piece apart and turn them over with the blank side facing up. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Give each small group of students a puzzle piece. Remind the children that Jesus wants us to hear His words and obey them so we will be like the wise man who built his house on the rocks. Go over the following points of the lesson. Then assign each group of children one of the points. They are to look for pictures in the magazines or draw ones that illustrate that point of the lesson. 1. People who are not proud will have an easier time following Jesus. 2. People who want to do right more than anything else will be happy. 3. People who are kind to others will receive kindness. 4. People who don’t keep mean or evil thoughts inside themselves will be with God. 5. People who try to be peaceful will be known as God’s sons and daughters. 6. We are to love our enemies and do good to them. When all the pieces are finished put them together. Explain that if we follow these words we will be living the one golden rule of love. Flip the puzzle over. Read the memory verse together on the other side. Look it up in the Bible together. GO INTO THE NEXT GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE ACTIVITY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE BEAN BAG TOSS Materials needed: Bean bag Masking tape WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) If you did not make the puzzle above, you will need to print the memory verse in the same order as given above onto six different pieces of construction paper. Lay the papers together as the puzzle would have been on the floor. Mark six different stations around the peripheral of the puzzle about 4-5 feet from the outside edge of the puzzle with small pieces of masking tape. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Each child begins at the station (masking tape piece) closest to the first word of the memory verse. They get two tries to toss the bean bag onto that puzzle piece (or paper). If they miss, they remain at that station until it is their turn again. If they get the bean bag onto the puzzle piece, they move on to the next masking tape station and try to get the bag onto the next puzzle piece. Keep taking turns until everyone has made it all the way around the puzzle board and said the complete memory verse. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - GOLDEN RULE CHARADES Materials needed: Newsprint pad OR blackboard OR write-on/wipe off board Writing utensils to match which above medium you choose WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Tell the children they have two minutes on the clock to tell you as many ways as they can think of when they need to remember the golden rule before they act. (For example: Look on p. 21 in Teacher’s quarterly for suggestions to give as examples)Write down all the answers the children give onto the board. Put children into pairs. Have them between themselves select one of the suggestions from the board and act it out. The rest of the children guess which one they’ve selected. Don’t forget to remind the children that following the golden rule is impossible to do without Jesus’ help.
