======================================================= Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, September 16, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date completed: August 1, 1997 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, THE WOMAN EVERYONE LOVED ======================================================= Lesson Aim: I witness for Jesus when I do something nice for someone. Memory Verse: "Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Matt. 5:16, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION PASSWORD [Materials needed: (5) slips of paper with the following words written on them, one on each slip. (Sun, flashlight, candle, lamp, Bible)] [Directions: Begin this activity by explaining that there are different ways to receive light. You have thought of five ways and have written them down on slips of paper. Divide the children into five groups. Give each group a slip of paper. Each child in the group is to think of a word that will describe the word on the slip. The clue words they think of cannot contain any part of the answer word. The clue word may only be one word. After each group has thought of their clue words or passwords bring all groups back together. The first group comes to the front and gives their clue words. The audience cannot guess the answer until all clue words have been given. That group sits down and group two comes to the front and gives its clue words. The audience tries to guess the word written on their slip of paper. Continue in this same manner until all five groups have an opportunity to present their clue words. Examples of some clue words that may be used are: sun - distant, bright, hot, rays flashlight - camping, batteries, switch, beam candle - flame, wax, wick, melts lamp - switch, bulb, shade, plug Bible - read, sacred, true, book What kind of light do we receive from the Bible? We receive truth and guidance about Jesus and about how He wants us to live. We are a light to people around us. We show them by the way we live and by the way we treat them what Jesus is like. We are all different, just like these lights give off light in a different way. The lady in our story today had a special way of letting her light shine, or showing others Jesus. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE BIBLE STORY SEWING CARDS [Materials needed: Xerox the Bible times clothes on p. 57 of the quarterly onto heavy card stock paper. Xerox the pink garment onto pink card stock and the blue onto blue. Enlarge the figure so it fills most of the sheet of card stock. Xerox enough copies so each child will have one.; skein of light pink yarn and light blue yarn; scissors; large plastic needles] [Directions: Cut out the xeroxed garments plus one plain garment so each outfit will have a front and a back. Using a small-holed puncher, punch holes around the peripheral of the garments. Give each child a front and a back to sew together with matching yarn and a needle. Have the children do their work while you tell the story. The garments will be used again during ACTING ON SCRIPTURE.] PLASTER MOLD VERSE [Materials needed: A quart of dry powdered plaster of paris or joint compound (when mixed with water it can be used to make prints because it is quick-setting.); 1 large heavy paper plate for each child; soapy water and towels; one plastic knife for each child] [Directions: THIS ACTIVITY MUST BE TRIED BEFOREHAND. ONLY THROUGH TRIAL AND ERROR CAN THE EXACT CONSISTENCY NEEDED FOR A GOOD MOLD BE ACHIEVED. Give each child a heavy paper plate. In a large bucket mix up the plaster of paris or joint compound with water according to the directions. Spoon a layer of the mixture onto each plate. Instruct the children to smooth the mixture slowly and evenly around the entire plate with their plastic knife. Allow to set briefly (that's the part you have to try ahead of time to know exactly how long) then have the children put both hands down onto the smoothed mixture to create their hand prints. All hands, utensils and surfaces must be washed with water immediately before mixture can harden. Make sure bucket is cleaned out immediately also. Allow hand prints to dry while you are doing ACTING ON SCRIPTURE. Children then return and using the markers print the words of the memory verse onto the hands. This can be done in a variety of ways. All words on palms of two hands, two words to each finger etc. The children should carry the print home on the plate and let it continue to harden for another 24 hours.] ACTING ON SCRIPTURE DORCAS' DEEDS [Materials needed: pens] [Directions: Explain to the children that we can all be as helpful as Dorcas was. We don't have to necessarily sew or bake food. There are many helpful things we can do that will open the door so that we can witness about Jesus also. On the front of the garment that each child sewed during GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE have the children print at least three names of someone they can help this week. Example - teacher, pastor, neighbor, parent, sister, brother, friend etc. Then have them turn the garment over and write down one way they can really help that person this week. Encourage the children to put the garment somewhere at home where they can see it and remember to follow through with their kind action.]
