=================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, July 8, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: June 15, 2000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, PETER TALKS TO JESUS BY LAKE GALILEE =================================================== Lesson Aim: Jesus wants me to be His follower and to help others follow Him too. Memory Verse: "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matt. 28:19, 20, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - FISHERMEN Materials needed: Dowel sticks (one 2-3' for each child) String (one 2-3' piece to hang from each dowel stick) One magnet to hang from the end of each dowel stick to provide weight 1 paper clip for each stick Hot glue gun and glue sticks Simple drawing of a fish (no longer than 3") Pipe cleaners Hole puncher WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Prepare each child a fishing pole by tying one end of the string around the end of the dowel stick and hot gluing the magnet to the other end of the string. Open the paper clip and shape it into a hook. Hot glue the paper clip to the bottom of the magnet. Draw five simple outlines of a fish onto white paper. On one fish print, "Go and make disciples of all nations." On the second fish print,"baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." On the third fish print, "and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." On the fourth fish print, "And surely I am with you always." On the fifth fish print, "to the very end of the age." Xerox this paper once for each child. Select a different color of xerox paper for each child, so all the fish they're trying to catch will be one color. Punch a hole in tail of each fish. Hang a round loop made from the pipe cleaner to each fish, so the paper clip hooks will have something to grab onto. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Mix the fish all up and drop them in a pile at the front of the room. Give each child a fishing pole. Assign each child a color of fish to catch. They cannot touch the fish at any time. If they cannot get to one of their fish, they have to wait until it becomes available. When everyone has caught all five of their fish they return to their seats with them. The fish will be used later. In our story today Jesus provides another miracle for his disciple friends involving fish. He has a lesson to teach them. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - SAND SCENE STORY Materials needed: Large box lid (sides 2-3"high) Sand Disposable cups Blue and brown construction paper Scissors Small rocks Tape Pepperidge Farm fish crackers Hair net Small sticks and twigs WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations except to gather the supplies. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: The students will make the props and create the scene as you tell the story. 1. Begin with the box lid. Have someone cut a large lake from the blue construction paper and tape it to the inside of the lid. 2. Have several children add cups of sand so all the box lid that is not lake is covered with sand. 3. Add rocks. 4. Assign someone the task of making a canoe-shaped boat from the brown construction paper. Include a mast. (Material for the sail is optional) 5. Sprinkle fish crackers around the lake and hang the hair net over the boat. 6. Build a small fire on the beach near the lake with the sticks and twigs. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE- MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY Materials needed: Fish from Getting Their Attention Activity (Each child has five of the same-colored fish) Large blue sheet WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Stretch the large blue sheet between to places of anchorage. The children should be able to stand or kneel behind it and not be seen. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Explain to the children that many fish like to swim in schools or groups. Let's see how many schools of fish we can put in the ocean. A school of fish is a group of five. In order to be able to put their school of fish in the ocean the students must be able to say the part of the memory verse on each fish in order. (This is a long verse so give some room for mistakes. Encourage with word clues along the way.) As they say each part they put the fish on their finger using the pipe cleaner like a finger loop. When all fish are ready, they stand behind the blue sheet holding their hand up so just the fish are visible from the other side. Keep encouraging group participation so the ocean can be full! ACTING ON SCRIPTURE -FISHING FOR PEOPLE Materials needed: Paper Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make paper figures. Make them different sizes and make about three for each child. (Simple gingerbread looking figures are fine) On one side of each figure write the following: 1. Anywhere 2. Word of God, knowledge of Jesus, Prayer 3. A real friendship with Jesus 4. Patience, faith and trust in Jesus Scatter these paper figures around the room on the floor, face down so the words don't show. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Explain to the children that they are going to fish for people. Those were Jesus' instructions to His disciples, and that is His instruction for us too. If they listen closely, they will discover how to fish for people. 1. What is the first thing a fisherman must do to fish? (Select a good spot) Where is a good spot to fish for people? Where can you find people who need Jesus? (Anywhere) Playgrounds, schools, stores, homes etc. Any place where people are can become a good fishing spot. 2. After the fisherman selects a spot, what does he have to have? (Fishing equipment. Boats, nets, bait etc.) When you find people who need Jesus, what equipment do you need to be able to share with them? The Word of God, a knowledge about Jesus and spiritual things and prayer. That is why we read our Bibles and study our lessons. We need to store away truths and know what we believe before we can share it with others. Fishing for people without prayer is like fishing for fish without a net or pole. You're not going to catch a thing. You're wasting your time. 3. What is the bait that attracts fish to the net or pole? What is the bait that attracts people to Jesus? Our lives. When people see we have a real friendship with Jesus, they desire that same thing. Does a fisherman jump in the water and start grabbing at fish? Not usually. They wait until the fish are attracted to the bait. In the same way we cannot make people want to know Jesus. They will be attracted to Him by seeing what He does in our lives. 4. Sometimes fish are caught right away. Sometimes no fish are caught. Fishing requires patience and time. Fishing for people requires patience and faith and trust in Jesus. Explain to the children that they are going to fish for the people on the floor. In order to be able to catch any or pick them up off the floor, they need to say the four things they need to be fishers of people. 1. I can fish anywhere 2. I need to know the Word of God and have a knowledge of Jesus and I need prayer. 3. I have to have a real friendship with Jesus myself 4. I must be patient and have faith and trust in Jesus. Choose a volunteer. Give them two minutes on the clock to see how many people they can collect. Remind them that the time keeping is part of the activity. It just keeps the time limited so everyone can have a turn. The object of the activity is not who collects the most paper figures rather who can remember and say what is needed to collect people. Give each child a turn collecting people. Have them take some paper figures home to remind them to be fishers of people with Jesus' help.
