Memory Verse: "I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him." Psalm 91:15, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION- TROUBLE PICTURES Materials needed: Paper and pencil for each child WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Give them each a sheet of paper. Give them a few minutes to draw a picture of when something bad happened to them. Use the questions below for prompters. Once they have drawn their pictures have them tell briefly what happened to them unless they want to keep it private. Have you ever....... Had a bee sting? Broken a bone? Gone through parents divorcing? Lost a pet? Had a friend or relative die? Gotten very sick? In our story today something very terrible happened to the man. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - PIN THE TROUBLE ON JOB Materials needed: Felt or copied picture of Job Felt board or bulletin board Thumb tacks Slips of paper with "troubles" written on WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) List the following items of trouble on separate pieces of paper. Write the blessings, one each, on the other side. Put the felt or copied (you can use the one from the quarterly if you don't have any other) picture of Job onto the bulletin board or felt board. Troubles - Oxen and donkeys were stolen, and the servants taking care of them were attacked and killed by Sabeans. - Fire came down from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants taking care of them. - The Chaldeans stole all his donkeys and killed his servants taking care of them. - A great wind struck the house of his oldest son with the seven sons and three daughters inside and killed them all. - Great sores covered Job from head to foot. Blessings - 14,000 sheep - 6,000 camels - 2,000 oxen - 2,000 donkeys - 7 sons - 3 daughters who were so beautiful that he gave them an inheritance as well - A long life to see all his children and grandchildren down to the 4th generation WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Pass out the troubles, making sure they keep that side up. Tell them that as you read the story and come upon a trouble they will bring their trouble up and pin it on Job. Once you have gotten to the end where God blesses Job, have them turn all the slips of paper over to reveal the blessings He gave him. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE- MEMORY VERSE FLOWERS Materials needed: Colorful construction paper Green pipe cleaners, 5 per child Floral tape (opt) Markers Glue WHAT THE TEACHER DOES:(To prepare ahead) Cut out 5, five petal daisy style flowers from all colors of construction paper, per child. You may wish to just draw the shapes and have the children cut them out. Cut out small circles for the centers of different colors, again 5 per child. If you have floral tape, cut out 10 green leaves per child with a straight narrow strip coming down from the bottom of the leaf approximately 1" long. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Look up the memory verse and read together. Talk about what we do for people when they are having some bad troubles like Job. Most often we send flowers. Wouldn't it be nice to give someone who is feeling down some flowers that let them know that God is with them? Give each child 5 flowers, 5 centers, 10 leaves (opt), and 5 green pipe cleaners. Have them print 3 words of the memory verse on each flower after they have glued on the centers. Curl the pipe cleaner over like a street lamp and glue the flower to the end. If your using floral tape and leaves, wrap the tape around the cleaner and the 1" long strip at the bottom of the leaves together. Encourage the children to give them to someone with troubles. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE- FRIENDSHIP BANNER Materials needed: Strip of white newsprint approx. 3' long Markers and pencils WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Talk about how Job's friends weren't really friends at all to him. Ask the children about how we could be friends to someone in trouble. Explain that they are going to make a banner to hang in your classroom to help remind them of being good friends to others. Draw the letters in the word FRIENDSHIP in large block style to be colored and decorated going from top to bottom. Have them think together of words that begin with each of the letters that describe a good friend.
