Cut a slit in the fat end on the bottom, with a paring knife. Have all other ingredients ready. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Ask the children to tell you the names of some healthy foods they like to eat. Guide them in including the names of fruits and vegetables, grains, and milk and cheese products. Explain that they are going to make a puppet for the story out of healthy food, that they can eat later. Give each child a carrot and a popsicle stick. Have them poke the popsicle stick up through the bottom of the carrot where the slit is. Using the cream cheese as the glue, affix the raisins or olive slices as eyes and the celery slice as a mouth. Put the parsley on top as hair. With a generous amount of cream cheese affix the celery sticks to the sides as arms and legs, two approx. midway, and two at the bottom. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE- FOUR STRONG BOYS PUPPET SHOW Materials needed: Vegetable puppets from Getting Their Attention Activity Small paper crown for king puppet Scripts printed up on pieces of paper WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Print up the following script using mainly Daniel, Shadrach , Meshach, Abednego, and King Nebuchadnezzar. If you have more students have one be Ashpenaz and the rest of the students are captives. KING NEB: I have conquered Judah, Jerusalem, and destroyed Solomon's temple. We have brought some of the very best young men back with us to train for our own purposes. Chief Officer Ashpenaz, teach these young men our language and writing. Give them my finest food and wines. CAPTIVES: Pretend to eat from the King's table. ASHPENAZ: You men will train for three years and will drink the King's wine and eat his food. DANIEL: No. We will not eat this kind of food or drink the wine. It is not good for our bodies. ASHPENAZ: You will look bad if you don't eat the special food and the King will kill me if I let that happen to you. MESHACH: No we won't. Give us 10 days of our food and then see how we look and feel. ABEDNEGO: Yes, if you will do that we will show you how much better we will be. SHADRACH: We only eat what our God has told us to eat. ASHPENAZ: O.k. Ten days! But you will change back to the King's diet if you look bad. Ten days later: ASHPENAZ: Wow! You guys look great! You look better than all the other captives. (Captives moan and groan and pretend to feel ill.) You may continue to eat the food your God says you should eat. Three years later: KING NEB: Bring all the young men to me so that I can see how strong they have gotten and how smart they have become. CAPTIVES: (Act like they don't know the answers to many of the questions the king asks.) DANIEL: Your Highness, as you can see from our tests we have outdone all the others in strength and smartness. SHADRACH : It is because our God has told us how to take care of our bodies. MESHACH: That is how we honor Him. ABEDNEGO: We have passed all the tests everyone has given us. KING NEB: I want to honor the four of you by putting you in high positions in my government. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE- MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITY Materials needed: One paper plate per child 11 small pieces of paper for each child. Clear contact paper WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On eight of the eleven slips of paper, write the names of 8 healthy foods or drink God has given us to enjoy. On the remaining three, write the names of 3 foods or drink God has instructed us not to use. Write one word of the memory verse including the text on the back of the 8 slips of paper. Cut the circles out of the middle of the paper plates. Cut each child two circles of clear contact paper slightly larger around then the middle of the plates you cut out. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Place each child's eleven slips of paper on the table in front of them. Ask them to sort the things that God says are good for our bodies from the things He says harms our bodies. Once they have correctly sorted the food the three bad choices can be thrown away. Have them turn over their eight papers and decide the order in which the words of the verse should be. When they're finished, put the sticky side of the first contact paper circle, down onto the back of the plate ring and then flip it over. Have them put their memory verse words in order onto the sticky center part of the front of the ring. Lay the second piece of contact paper down on top the memory verse words to seal them in. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE- HONOR GOD PINS Materials needed: Colored foam or felt Scissors Permanent markers Safety pins Hot Glue WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make fruit or vegetable shapes on the colored foam or felt. Cut them out so each child will have one. With a pencil draw in the lines, stem, etc. for the children to trace over with permanent markers. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Each child selects a fruit or vegetable to "finish" adding permanent marks where the pencil outlines are. They may wish to add the words, "Honor God" on the front of their fruit pin. (Teachers only: Hot glue the safety pin on the back of each pin.) If time and budget allow, children could make more pins to share with others as they witness about their commitment to God to honor their bodies.
