=================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, Apr. 8, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Cyndi Long) Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, THE WOMAN WHO GAVE EVERYTHING =================================================== Lesson Aim: I show my love for Jesus by happily bringing Him an offering. Memory Verse: "God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Cor. 9:7, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION SACRIFICIAL GIVING [Materials needed: 10 pennies for each child; 5 small containers to use as banks with the following labels on them: clothing, food, offering, toys, recreation.(Explain that the word, recreation means sports, amusements, entertainment, games etc.)] [Directions: Set the containers in various spots in the room. Give each child the ten pennies when they enter the room. Inform them that the ten pennies are theirs. They are to circulate around the room looking for the containers and deciding what they will do with their money. If they have trouble reading the label on the container they may ask another child or you for help. Give them five minutes to complete this activity. Call them back together as a group and discuss the following questions: 1. Does anybody still have all their money? 2. Did anybody get rid of all their money in the containers? 3. Did you have a hard time deciding how much money to put in each container? Retrieve the containers and display them up front so you can refer to them as you tell the story. "In our story today a woman shows the disciples what the meaning of sacrifice giving is. Let's see if you can figure out what that means also." GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE MEMORY HOPSCOTCH [Materials needed: Masking tape; paper and crayons (if the game will be played indoors)] [Directions: Make a hopscotch board using the chalk or masking tape. (Cut down in size to six squares instead of ten; 3 single, 1 double set and 1 single on top.) If you have a small Sabbath school the children may draw the following symbols on the paper. For a large Sabbath school you will want to have them pre-drawn ahead of time. (1). A symbol to represent God such as a Bible, cross or cloud. (2). A heart (3). A large letter "A" (4). A happy face (5). A happy face (6). A gift or open hands Have the children take turns saying the verse as they land on each square of the board. Give each child a penny. When they throw the penny the word is removed from whatever square the penny lands on. They then repeat the verse filling in the missing word. The game may be continued until all the words have been removed. Several games may be set up at once to accommodate more children. The game can be played outdoors on a parking lot using sidewalk chalk. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE MY GIFTS TO JESUS [Materials needed: 1 sheet of heavy white card stock paper for each child; contact paper with pretty designs (each child will need 8" X 5" piece to cover half the front of the card stock); 1 pretty miniature bow for each child; pens or thin- line markers; scissors] [Directions: Ahead of time, fold the card stock papers in half and cut the contact paper to the above size for each child. Lift the flap of the card stock and print the following message inside with permanent marker. Besides money I can give God __________________ and____________________ Signed___________________ Some ideas that might encourage the children in filling in the blanks are: time, energy, talents, heart. Pass the materials out and have the children fill in the blanks on the inside and sign their name. Give them a contact paper cover and after they have adhered it to the front show them how to trim the access with scissors. Finally give them a bow to attach to the top so the finished product looks like a gift.] "I LOVE JESUS" OFFERING CONTAINER [Materials needed: One quarter holder book for each child (Get them from your local bank or make your own by cutting a piece of heavy card stock paper, 6"long and 4" wide. Make 12 slits in the paper with a razor blade, 3 rows with 4 slits in each row. Cut out a piece of poster board measuring 6" long and 8" wide. Fold it in half so it is the same size folded as the card stock paper. Open the poster board and glue the card stock to the bottom half of the poster board. Only glue around the edges, not in the middle where the slits are.); construction paper; markers, glue and glitter.] [Directions: Give each child a quarter holder book and a piece of colored construction paper of their choice. Have them close their quarter holder books and trace around them onto the colored construction paper. Next they cut it out and glue it to the outside top of the quarter holder book when it is shut. This makes a cover for their book that they can decorate. Supply them with markers, crayons, glitter, sequins and any other small items that can be glued for decoration. Leave a space in the middle for the words, "I", a "heart", and "Jesus". Taking a picture of the child and having them glue it in place of the letter "I" adds a personal touch. Brainstorm together and think of ideas on how they could make some extra money above their normal allowance to share with Jesus. Encourage them to bring their quarter holder books back and show you when they have completed the project. An additional idea in place of the quarter holder books would be for each child to make a container from sand and cornstarch modeling dough. Follow the recipe and directions below. 1 c. sand, « c. cornstarch, 1 tsp. Powdered alum, 3/4 c. hot water Mix sand, cornstarch and alum. Add hot water, stirring vigorously until well mixed. Cook over medium heat until thick, stirring constantly. When cool, mold as desired. Leave at Sabbath school to dry for one week. This dough is grainy and stonelike and can be used to make interesting sculptures. It does not need shellac or varnish to protect it. Store leftover dough in an airtight container. The above recipe is enough for four children. The recipe is from Recipes for Art and Craft Materials, by Helen Roney Sattler, 1973.
