===================================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, April 3, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: March 15, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, THE BOY KING ===================================================================== Lesson Aim: Even though I am young, God has work He wants me to do. Memory Verse: "I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart." Psa. 40:8,NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - WARM FUZZIES Materials needed: 1 Bag of marshmallows (big bonfire roasting type) Toothpicks Small decorative icing tubes (2-3 different colors) Small strips of paper (3/4 - 1" high by 2-3" long) (Each child will need 6 slips) Pencils Ziploc bags WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Pre-print the following sentence on each strip of paper. I like the way you_________________. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Divide the large group into small groups of six or less. Give each child 6 marshmallows, 6 toothpicks and 6 strips of paper. Keep the pencils and tubes of icing close at hand within everyone's reach. Ask the children to spend a few moments thinking of each child in the group. They are to think of one thing that each child in the group does that they like or appreciate. It cannot be anything having to do with the way the person looks or dresses. They need to think of things that the other students do or are good at. They complete a sentence strip for each child in the group. (Be prepared to give help with spelling and writing as needed. You may also need to help them with very simple ideas, especially if they are not well acquainted with the students within the group. Write your own for each child in the group. For example: I like the way you smile a lot. I like the way you come faithfully every week to Sabbath school. I like the way you are always eager to pray.) Secondly, each child decorates the marshmallow with eyes, nose, mouth and hair etc. using the icing. Use icing sparingly. Lay the strip of paper across the top of the marshmallow and stab through it with the toothpick. Lastly, they share it with the person they made it for. Write names on the outside of the Ziplock bags. Place the marshmallows on top of the bags until the icing is drier. Children take their "warm fuzzies" home after Sabbath school to share with their family. Out loud, read a warm fuzzy that has been written about each child. Ask for suggestions about how God can use boys and girls with these special gifts. You don't have to wait until your talents have grown larger or better before you begin using them for God. The boy in our Bible story today didn't. He began working for God at a very young age. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY RHYME Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: The children listen as you tell the Bible story in rhyme. Whenever you get to the end of the line where there is a blank, point to the children. That is their cue to supply a missing word. Remind them that the words at the end of a verse will rhyme with the ones above them. There once was a queen named Athaliah Like Ahab and Jezebel she was ________(bad) She killed all her family, they were out of her way But her actions made the high priest quite __________(sad) So he took the queen's young son named, Joash to the temple to live and to ____(hide) Not even the wicked queen herself Knew there was a young king in____(side) By the time Joash was seven It was time to let the secret ___(out) They crowned him and gave him a book of the law Long live the king the people did _______(shout) When the wicked queen heard all the noise And saw the crown on her son's ________(head) She commanded the guards to take him away But they took her away in______(stead) The idols of Baal were torn down The temple was in need of re______(pair) So Joash constructed a special money box And said, "Place it by the temple door, ________(there)." When people would come to the temple They dropped their money in____(side) The temple was fixed and Joash reined well But then high priest, Jehoiada _______(died) I wish that this story now ended with Joash staying faithful and _______(true) but he began worshipping idols and didn't finish the work God gave him to________(do) GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BEAN BAG TOSS Materials needed: A bean bag (Cut off the top 3" of a sock, sew one end shut, fill with dried beans and sew the other end shut.) 8 pieces of colored construction paper. (Preferably, red, pink, yellow, orange, light green, dark green, blue, violet) Permanent marker Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Print the memory verse words on the colored construction paper as follows: red - "I desire pink - to do yellow - your will, orange - O my God; lt. Green - your law dk. Green - is within blue - my heart." Violet - Psa. 40:8, NIV Place the squares of construction paper in random fashion 2-3 feet apart in a small corner of the room. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Look up the memory verse together in the Bible. Talk about what it means to do God's will. What is His law and how can it be written in our hearts? (Remember the brain controls the heart.) Designate a starting place close to the red construction paper square. The first child throws the bean bag and tries to land it so it is touching the red square. He repeats the words on the square, then throws the bean bag toward the pink square which contains the next portion of the verse. For those who do not know how to read or who have not learned the verse, they can know which squares to throw to by following the colors of the rainbow. Whenever a child throws the bean bag and misses a square, he remains at the square he is on and it becomes the next child's turn. Before a child advances to a new square have him repeat all the previous squares up to that point. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - SABBATH SCHOOL TREASURE BOX Materials needed: Shoe box (Or any box you can cut a hole in and decorate the outside of) Pretty foil wrapping paper Scissors Stickers Jewels/Sequins (optional) Colored 3 X 5 cards WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Review with the children the part of the Bible story that talks about Joash making a treasure chest to sit outside the temple to collect coins for the treasury to fix up the temple. Even though Joash was young, he had a work to do for God in helping repair the temple. God has a special work for each of us to do no matter what size we are or how old we are. Have the children help you make a special treasure box that will sit right inside the door of the Sabbath school room. Make it as pretty as possible. Cut the 3 X 5 cards in half. Sit them by the chest. Tell the children that their goal will be to fill the chest with 3 X 5 "coins" by the end of the quarter. Each week when they arrive at Sabbath school as soon as they walk in they write on one of the cards at least one way they were able to work or witness for Jesus during the past week. They write only one thing on each card, but they may fill out as many cards as they wish. You may want to ask them to help you think of things they can do at their age and then post their ideas above the box. Comment on the status of the box from week to week.
