===================================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, March 20, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: January 31, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, THE STORY OF TWO MIRACLES ===================================================================== Lesson Aim: God loves to use His power to help me. Memory Verse: "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Matt. 19:26, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - POSSIBLE/IMPOSSIBLE LINE-UP Materials needed: Masking tape or yarn Lettering for following words (POSSIBLE IMPOSSIBLE) Yardstick WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Lay the yardstick down horizontally on the floor. Use an area large enough for all children to be able to stand in a vertical row going away from the yardstick. Using masking tape or yarn measure over three feet on the yardstick and run the tape or yarn across from that point horizontally. Run a second strip of tape or yarn vertically down from the middle of the three foot section of tape. With the lettering make the word POSSIBLE at the top left of the tape measured at 3 feet. Make the word IMPOSSIBLE at the top right of the tape. The 6 ' vertical tape runs perpindicular keeping these words separate. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Stand the students in the middle on the 6 ' tape. Ask the following questions. If they think the answer to the question is POSSIBLE, they hop over to the left into the side marked POSSIBLE. If the answer is IMPOSSIBLE, they hop to the right into the side marked IMPOSSIBLE. Before each new question is asked they hop back onto the tape. 1. Do you think it is possible to do two things at once? 2. Do you think it is possible for someone your age to eat two whole pumpkin pies in one sitting? 3. Do you think it is possible to win a game ten times in a row? 4. Do you think it is possible to find a marble dropped in a stream? 5. Do you think it is possible to get a bicycle to float on a quiet lake? 6. Do you think it is possible to know what grade you are getting in spelling? 7. Do you think it is possible to know what I was thinking this morning at breakfast? In our story today, two impossible things happen. We call them miracles, because only God made it possible for them to happen. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - SPAGHETTI PICTURES Materials needed: « lb. Cooked medium or thick spaghetti (store in refrigerator until ready for use) Construction paper (one for each child) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cook and drain the spaghetti. Make sure and rinse thoroughly so there's no excess starch. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: As the students listen to the story they build a picture using the spaghetti to illustrate it. Stop at the following points and wait briefly for the children to add to their picture. (You can make a picture along with them as a sample to help stimulate their thinking, but encourage creativity on their part.) 1. One of the schools of the prophets needed a bigger place to meet for classes. (Make a square in one corner of the paper to symbolize the school) 2. Students were to cut down trees near the Jordan River. (Make 2-3 simple circle trees with trunks in the opposite corner of the school; make several rippling lines separating the school and the grove of trees to represent the river) 3. One of the student's ax heads came off while he was chopping wood. (Make a small stick figure near the river with a sad face) 4. Elisha cut off a stick and through it into the river. (Make a larger stick figure near the small stick figure; lay a string of spaghetti across the river to represent the stick Elisha threw in.) 5. The ax head floated to the top of the river and the student retrieved it. (Change the small stick figure's face to a happy smile and make an ax for his one hand.) THE SECOND STORY IN THE LESSON IS TOLD. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE T-SHIRT Materials needed: Plain white T-shirts (Ask children to bring one from home) Glitter Fabric Crayons OR fabric paint (depending on age and budget) Bibles Pencil WHAT THE TEACHER DOES (To prepare ahead): There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Have the children look up the memory verse in their Bibles and read it together. Talk about how the greatest gift from God was something that was impossible for man to have. Salvation is only possible through God's grace. Print the first five words of the verse across the top of the T-shirt. Draw a large cross in the middle of the shirt. Print the last seven words across the bottom of the shirt. Print the text at the lower right corner. Children color or paint the words and outline or fill in the cross. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - POSSIBILITY MIMES Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Group the children into pairs. Each pair is to think of something that seems impossible to do unless God helps them. Consult suggestions below to give children ideas. One child then portrays the impossibility and the other child portrays what is possible with God's help. 1. One child portrays a bad temper; the second child portrays a calm, self-controlled happy child. 2. One child portrays stealing several things and putting them in pockets; the second child portrays paying for things. 3. One child portrays smoking; the second child pretends to throw cigarettes away and breathe freely. 4. One child portrays reading the Bible, then putting it aside with a questioning look on his face; the second child portrays reading the Bible, having a questioning look then praying. After each portrayal repeat the memory verse together before moving on to the next one.
