=================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, Feb 19, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: January 31, 2000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, JESUS BRINGS HIS FRIEND BACK TO LIFE ==================================================== Lesson Aim: Jesus was happy to raise His friend Lazarus back to life. He is anxious to raise all those who love Him when He comes again. Memory Verse: ".....all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out....." John 5:28,29 NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION GUESS THAT FEELING [Materials Needed: Large plain white sheet of butcher block paper approximately 6 feet long by 5 feet high. (You may have to tape two long strips together to get the desired height.) Cut 3-4 circles in the paper about the size of dinner plates so a Primary child's face shows through when they're standing or sitting behind the paper.] [Directions: Ask the children to help you think of words that describe feelings we have. This may include anger, joy, jealousy, fear, sadness. Have another adult help you hold up the paper with holes at the front of the class. Ask for volunteers to come behind the paper and show what someone's face would look like who is feeling angry. Follow this same procedure for the other emotions. Call on different volunteers each time. Discuss the following questions:] 1. Which are your favorite feelings? 2. Why do you think of the other feelings or emotions as bad? (Because they usually mean that something is happening in your life that is causing you discomfort or pain.) If you listen closely to our story today you will notice that all of these feelings are present. When you recognize one of these feelings being described, raise your hand and tell me which one. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE RESURRECTION EPITAPH [Materials Needed: Large round rocks to represent stone rolled in front of Lazarus's grave (one rock for each child or group of children, depending on the size of your Sabbath school. Clean the rocks so they can be written on.); permanent broad-tip markers or paint and brushes; newspaper] [Directions: Briefly go over the Bible story showing pictures from the quarterly, the Bible or The Bible story book, vol. 9, pp. 22-27. Then explain to the children that when people die in our country a tombstone is placed at the burial site with an epitaph written on it. An epitaph is words that tell when the person was born, when they died, who they are related to and anything else special the loved ones want us to know about them. Have the children imagine what Lazarus's tombstone might have looked like if someone had written on it after he was resurrected. Help the children think of ideas that will tell others what happened to Lazarus, and give them markers to illustrate these ideas through words or pictures onto their "rock tombstones". Use the following questions for discussion: 1. The Bible tells us that the mourning and funeral services conducted back in Jesus' day really bothered Jesus. Why do you think this was so? 2. What did Jesus tell Martha to give her hope and help her with her sadness? (Read John 11:25 together) Is that promise still true for us today? ACTING ON SCRIPTURE RESURRECTION REUNION [Materials Needed: Sticky name tags or labels, permanent markers, posterboard with a title at the top, REUNION ROSTER] [Directions: Buy enough name tags so that each child could have 4-5 each. Explain to the children that sometimes people get together who haven't seen each other in a long time. They want to talk about old times and catch up on what they've missed in each other's lives. When this happens, we call it a reunion. When Jesus returns the second time, there will be a grand reunion. We will be able to be with people we haven't seen in a long time. We'll be able to talk about memories and enjoy one another's company as if we had never been apart. At this reunion we will also be able to meet people we've heard about over and over in our Bible stories but have never met. I don't know whether or not we'll need name tags in heaven in order to be able to recognize one another. I'm sure Jesus has a special plan for us to help us become reacquainted with old friends and introduced to new. Ask the children for names of people they would like to see at the reunion. The names can be loved ones who have died in their life time or Bible heroes they have never "officially" met. For each name they submit, give them a name tag and a permanent marker. They print the name on the tag and peel off the sticky backing adding it to the "reunion roster" at the front of the classroom.] MEMORY VERSE REVIEW [Materials Needed: 12 sheets of paper, 8 1/2" X 11". Print one letter of the word RESURRECTION on each sheet in large bold lettering. On the other side print the verse word as shown: (R) - All (E) - who (S) - are (U) - in (R) - their (R) - graves (E) - will C - hear (T) - his (I) - voice (O) - and (N) come out.] [Directions: Pass the sheets out in random order. Have the children come to the front and arrange themselves in the correct order so the verse can be read by the rest of the group. After the verse is read, the children turn the sheets over to the other side and the word RESURRECTION appears. Help the children understand that the memory verse describes what the resurrection is. When Jesus returns the dead will hear his voice and come forth from their graves.
