===================================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, January 8, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: December 15, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, A KIND TRAVELER ===================================================================== Lesson Aim: Memory Verse: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart...'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" Luke 10:27, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - RESCUE 911 Materials needed: 3 sheets 6 strips of cloth or rags Ace bandages (5-6) Band-aids WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) At the front of the room make three separate piles. In each pile include, a sheet, 2 strips of cloth, an ace bandage or two and several band-aids. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Select three children to be the "accident victims". They are to lie down near a pile of medical supplies that have been placed at the front of the room. Explain to the children that there have been three terrible automobile accidents on the same road. One involves the town drunk. (Refer to one of the accident victims.) Another involves the school bully. (Refer to a second accident victim.) The third involves the chief of police. (Refer to the last accident victim.) At this point no one knows what any of the injuries are. Each child is to decide who they would help first. They then go to that accident victim and decide as a group how they will administer first aid or treatment. Once a group as formed at each accident victim, assign each victim his/her injuries. (For example: Accident victim #1 has head injuries, a broken leg and some internal bleeding. Accident victim #2 has a back injury, cuts and bruises on face and a broken arm. Etc.) Allow approximately 5-7 minutes for the groups to care for their accident victims. Then return to the seats and discuss the following: 1. What helped you decide which accident victim to go to first? 2. Did who was involved in the accident have anything to do with your decision on who to help first? In our Bible story today Jesus teaches the listening crowd about who deserves our love, help and attention. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - ARTIST ADD-ON Materials needed: 1 Poster board or large sheet of plain white paper Easel OR flannel board on stand Old shirts or aprons for wearing when painting (one for each child) Poster or tempera paints in basic colors One brush One container of water Several paper towels WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Set up an art corner or station. Place the poster board or sheet of plain white paper on the covered easel board and secure in place. Place the paints, brush, water and paper towels within easy reach of the board. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Have each child put an apron or old shirt on for use as a paint smock. Place no more than 4-6 children at a board. Supply more boards and paint supplies for additional groups. Explain to the children that this is a teamwork art project. As you narrate the story you will pause at various intervals. When you pause that is the signal for a child in the group to paint into the picture what they have just heard about in the story. They only have one minute to add this touch to the picture. They then pass the brush to another child in the group. When you pause in the story again that child adds to the picture. Establish two rules before beginning this activity: 1. At no time can anything be changed or altered in the picture that has already been done by a previous child. 2. Criticism of another person's artwork will put you out of the "artist's guild". All work is done so you the teacher cannot see. When the story is finished, the team may display their work and explain it if necessary. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE -MEMORY VERSE RELAY Materials needed: Robe Styrofoam cups Pitcher of water Sleeping bag Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Lay the sleeping bag in one corner of the room. Ten feet from that corner, place a chair with the robe, styrofoam cups and pitcher of water on it. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: The memory verse is a relay. The children line up with the first child in line even with the chair. The rest of the children line up behind the first child vertically. The first child in line lays down and pretends to be the Jew that was robbed in the Bible story. The second child in line takes the robe and puts it around the hurt child, pours the child a drink of water and gives him a little, then proceeds to carry him/her as best he can to the sleeping bag in the corner. He repeats the memory verse as he deposits the child on the bag. He then returns to the back of the line. The child on the sleeping bag gets up quickly returns to the line and becomes the Samaritan to the next child in line who plays the part of the injured Jew. When all children have had an opportunity to play the part of the Jew and the Samaritan the activity is over. Each child must repeat the memory verse when depositing the injured child on the bag. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR COLLAGE? Materials needed: Heavy styrofoam paper plate (one for each child) Scissors Magazines Glue WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Have the children draw a circle in the middle of the plate large enough to print the words, "Who is my neighbor?" Secondly, have them cut out pictures of all kinds of different people from magazines. (Include elderly, disabled, children, mixed ethnic backgrounds etc.) Have them glue the pictures in a collage fashion covering the paper plate completely including the edges. Talk about ways to love and serve our different neighbors. (They can also include written words of people they think of that they cannot find a picture for.)
