===================================================================== Title: Primary Sabbath School Program, January 2, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Cyndi Long) Date: December 15, 1998 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, SAUL TALKS TO AN EVIL ANGEL ===================================================================== Lesson Aim: God will help me see through Satan's lies. Memory Verse: "The living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing." Ecclesiastes 9:5, NIV. GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - GHOST STORY Materials needed: One sheet of plain white paper Lemon juice, approx. 1-2 Tbsp Paintbrush Matches Candle Pencil WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Paint the memory verse on the top half of the sheet of paper with the lemon juice. Do this the night before to allow it to dry. It should be completely invisible when dry. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: In class, using a pencil, print the words, "Ghosts are dead people coming back to talk to us" on the bottom half of the paper. Light the candle. "Did you know there is a ghost story in the Bible? Are there such things as ghosts? Do you know someone who has died? Could they be a ghost?" Encourage the children to think but don't correct any wrong answers. "On my sheet of paper I have a sentence I want you to read." Have a student read it and talk a little about it. While you are talking, begin CAREFULLY holding the paper over the flame of the candle so the heat is on the lemon juice printing. As it heats and begins to lightly scorch, the letters will turn a golden brown and become visible. Read the verse together. In our story today, Saul believed one of Satan's lies about death. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - CAMP FIRE STORY Materials needed: Several large stones to make a fire circle 2 Logs or small pieces of wood Orange construction paper or tissue paper Wooden skewer sticks Glue and scissors Flashlight WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut flame shapes from the construction paper or tissue paper and glue the skewers onto them lengthwise leaving about 2" sticking out the bottom to stick between the wood pieces. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Lay the stones in a circle. Place the logs in the center with the "flames" stuck between. Ask the children to come sit around your camp fire and listen to your camp fire story. Turn the light off in the room for more effect. Shine the flashlight on your "fire" while your telling the lesson story. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - INVISIBLE MEMORY VERSE Materials needed: A sheet of paper for each child Paint brushes for each child Lemon juice (1 Tbsp. for each child) Slips of paper with the printed candle instructions for the parents WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: ( To prepare ahead) Print and copy onto all the sheets of paper the following, leaving large blanks for the children to be able to write/paint in. The ____________ know that they will _______, but the __________ know ____________. Ecclesiastes 9:5, NIV. Candle Instructions to be taken home by each child for his/her parent: Dear Mom or Dad, Your child has written invisible words in the blanks of their memory verse paper. To make visible, YOU hold the paper over top of a candle flame and allow to SLOWLY heat until the invisible letters in the blanks are lightly scorched. Read the memory verse and discuss what it means with your child. WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Look up the memory verse together and read. Give each child a paper with the copied verse, a brush, and some lemon juice. Help them to remember what words they need to paint into the blanks. Try not to use too much lemon juice at a time, as it makes the paper too soggy. At the end of class give each child their paper with a copy of the parent's instructions clipped to the top to take home. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE -JESUS IS MY LIGHT CANDLE Materials needed: Baby food jar or other small jar, one per child Votive candles, one per child Labels, one per child Stickers for decoration WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Print on the labels, "God will help me see through Satan's lies." WHAT THE STUDENTS DO: Give each child a jar and candle and a label. Talk to them about Jesus being our "Light". He is the only way to know what is true. If we ask Him, he will always guide us in discovering truth. Explain that their candles are to remind them of Jesus' light and His truth. Have them put the candle inside the jar, place the label on the outside and decorate with a few stickers.
