******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, November 25, 2,000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: November 15, 2,000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, A KING HEARS ABOUT GOD'S LOVE ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: Today is the best time to choose Jesus. Memory Verse: "Now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation." 2 Cor. 6:2, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - ALMOST DRIVERS Materials needed: Heavy sectional paper plates (to make steering wheels out of) Posterboard Hole puncher Yarn Markers Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make a steering wheel for each child by cutting out the food sections of the plates leaving the outside rim and dividers. Make each child a key from the posterboard. Punch a hole in the top of the key. Cut each child a piece of yarn about 12" long. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a steering wheel, key and piece of yarn. Have them thread the yarn through the hold in the top of the key and tie a knot. Then attach the other end of the yarn to the side of the steering wheel plate and tie a knot. Use markers to decorate the steering wheel. Explain to the children that they are going to help you take a drive. They are to copy everything you do. 1. Get in your chair and pretend to close the door. 2. Using the key, start your engine. 3. Look behind you pretending to back up, then begin driving straight ahead. 4. Slam on your brakes and say, "Watch out! We almost hit a cat. 5. Begin driving looking straight ahead. Pretend to put a blinker on. Say, "We almost turned in there at Tastee Freeze to get ice-cream, oh well." Continue driving looking straight ahead. 6. Pretend to be looking for a specific street. Say, "There's the street we're looking for. We almost got lost." 7. Pretend to be looking for a parking space. Say, "Quickly, let's pull in here. We almost missed getting this good parking place." 8. Shut the engines off and put the steering wheels away. Say, "Did you see how many times things almost happened to us? What does almost mean? It means something could have happened but it didn't. We could have hit that cat, but we didn't. What else almost happened during our trip? (We almost got ice cream, but we didn't. We almost got lost, but we didn't. We almost missed a parking space, but we didn't) Some things that almost happen are good things we wish would happen. Some things that almost happen are bad and we are glad they don't happen. In our Bible story today an important man almost decides to love Jesus and be His friend. But then it doesn't happen. Isn't that a sad almost? Let's find out more about it. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY SPOON PUPPETS Materials needed: Cheap wooden spoons 5-6 different colored felt squares Markers Hot glue gun/glue sticks Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut out plain robe fronts (like paper dolls) one for each child's spoon. Make the robes short enough that the child can still hang on to the stick at the bottom. Cut out different features that the children can add to their figures to make them unique. (Stripes of different colors to glue on robe fronts; little beanie-type hats for on top of spoon heads for common folk; helmets for top of spoon heads for soldiers; crowns for on top of king's heads; felt ties for belts around robe front waists; etc.) WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a wooden spoon. Have them make the face with markers. Assign each child a figure from the Bible story to dress their spoon puppet as. Help them choose various accessories to add as features to their puppet's costume. After each puppet is made, review the Bible story having the children hold up the appropriate puppet as the person is talked about in the lesson. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE -MEMORY VERSE SONG AND PUPPET PLAY Materials needed: Music to the tune of The Bear Went Over the Mountain OR My Fingers Are Starting to Wiggle Piano player or Tape recorder WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Practice singing the memory verse to the above mentioned tune using the following alternate words: Now is the time of God's favor Replaces: (The bear went over the mountain) now is the day of salvation Replaces: (The bear went over the mountain) I read it here in my Bible Replaces: (The bear went over the mountain) the Holy Word of God Replaces: (To see what he could see) WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Practice singing it several times. Sit the children in a circle. Using a Paul spoon puppet and a king spoon puppet, give them to two different children sitting in the circle. They begin passing the puppets around. (They can keep their eyes closed or open as you wish). The memory verse can be sung as the puppets are being passed or you can just say stop. Whoever has the Paul puppet repeats the verse to the King puppet. The king puppet is then replaced with the Paul puppet and only the King puppet is passed around the circle. When the music stops or you say stop whoever has the King puppet is the one the child with the Paul puppet says the memory verse to. The Paul puppet is then replaced with the King puppet and the Paul puppet is passed around the circle. This passing and exchanging continues until all children have had an opportunity to say the verse. (The idea is whoever the memory verse is said to becomes the one who does the repeating of the verse to a new child) ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - DECISION WATCHES Materials needed: Colored foam (several assorted colors) Scissors Permanent marker (thin-tip) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Out of the colored foam, cut out wrist watch shapes, one for each child. On the "face" of each watch write the words, I choose Jesus now. On one of the straps make a small slit, so that the other strap can fit through it. Trim down the other strap so it will fit through the silt. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Talk with the children about how people look at clocks and watches so they can do things at certain times. Remind them how almost can turn out to be the wrong time. The best time to choose Jesus as your friend is NOW. Give them each a foam watch. Read the face on it to them. Help them each choose a watch and put it on. Trim the straps. Show them how to get someone to put one strap through the slit of the other strap and tighten it. Wear the watches while singing the memory verse.
