Memory Verse: "God is...an ever-present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - LETTER TIME Materials needed: Stationary/envelopes (2 envelopes and 2 sheets of stationary for each child) Stickers Mailbox (make one out of cardboard) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Write each child a very short note on one of their pieces of stationary. Put it in their envelope, include a sheet of stickers, seal it and address it to them. Put these in a small mailbox or cardboard box made to look like a mailbox. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Ask the children if they like to receive letters. Have them go to the box and retrieve their mail. Read each of their notes to them. Talk about how much fun it is to get mail. Some mail brings happy news, some brings sad. Letters are an important way we keep in touch with each other. Give each child a sheet of stationary and an envelope. Encourage them to think of 1 - 3 things they want to tell someone. Write it on their stationary for them. Have them fold it up, stick it in the envelope and seal it shut. They can use some of their stickers to decorate the envelope if they wish. Encourage them to give the letter to the person sometime this week. In our Bible story today, Paul wrote several letters to different churches because he could not be with them in person. Let's look at some of them. (Show the children the books of the Bible that Paul wrote then GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY.) GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE -BIBLE PICTURE WINDOW Materials needed: 5 X 7 cardboard frame for each child (one that can stand alone) Small post-it tabs (4 different colors) Crayons Pictures depicting the following: An envelope addressed to one of the churches and a hand-written letter with a scripture to that church Paul preaching Eutychus sleeping in window Eutychus lying on ground at bottom of window A boat sailing away WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Draw or xerox the 5 pictures onto 5 X 7 pieces of paper. Each child needs the five set of pictures. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children color the five pictures. Have them place a colored tab at the left-hand corner of the picture of the envelope and letter. Next have them place a colored tab about an inch from the left-hand corner on the picture of Paul preaching. Third have them place a colored tab in the center of the picture of Eutychus sleeping in the window. Fourth have them place a colored tab about one inch from the right-hand corner of the picture of Eutychus lying on the ground. Finally have them place another colored tab at the right-hand corner of the picture of the boat sailing away. Take all their pictures and put them in order according to the story. Insert them into their cardboard frame. The tabs should be hanging out so the papers can be pulled out. Explain to the children that the frame is a window. When you indicate, they are to pull the pictures out one at a time to reveal the next one. At the end of the story, show them how to put the pictures back in and encourage them to take their window viewer home to share the story with someone else. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - A CALL AWAY Materials needed: Push-button phone (preferably a cordless or one that can be passed easily) A visual timer (optional) Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. There are nine words including the text of the memory verse. Each time you say a word of the verse push the next number on the phone. (Example - Say, "God" and push the number 1 of the phone. Say, "is" and push the number 2, etc.) Have each child practice saying each word of the verse going from numbers 1 - 9 on the telephone. As soon as one child is finished they quickly pass the phone to the next child. Whether or not you time the children is optional. Help the children understand that God is always there ready to help just like we can always use the phone when we need help. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - RHYTHM RIDDLES Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Practice saying the following verses using a body patchen to accompany the verse such as: Both hands slap thighs Clap hands together Smack palms against a person sitting opposite you WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Divide the children into pairs. Have them sit opposite each other, but close enough for their palms to be able to smack together. Say the following verses having them repeat each line after you. Do the patchen motions as you speak each line. When you get through all these verses have them try making up their own. Teacher: I have a trouble (slap thighs, clap hands, smack palms) Children: I have a trouble (repeat patchen) Teacher: Here's what it is Children: Here's what it is Teacher: I hate the dark Children: I hate the dark Teacher: What can I do?
