******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, November 11, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: September 15, 2,000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, ONLY ONE TRUE GOD ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: God's helpers pray to and love the one true God. Memory Verse: "Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only." Matt. 4:10, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - CLAY IDOLS Materials needed: Clay Poster paints Brushes Aprons or large shirts Cookie sheet Oven WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Homemade clay is much cheaper. Mix together 4 cups flour and 1 cup salt. Make a well in the middle. Pour in 1 cup of warm water. Get another cup of water ready. Mix and knead clay mixture together with hands, adding more water as needed. Roll clay into a ball and keep kneading for approximately five minutes. Finished clay should not be crumbly or sticky. Refrigerate clay until ready for use. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have each child put on an apron or large shirt to cover their Sabbath clothes. Give them each some clay to work with. Ask them to make what they think an idol looks like. OPTIONAL - Use paints to put faces and details on the sculptures. Bake on the cookie sheet in an oven until hard. (THESE IDOLS WILL BE DESTROYED IN THE GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE ACTIVITY) In our Bible story today idols carved in the image of a woman continued to cause much trouble for Paul and his friends. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - FINGER PUPPET ROLE-PLAY Materials needed: 10 medium size white sticky dots for each child (office supply stores sell them) Pens WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a sheet or row of 10 sticky dots. Have them draw eyes and a round open mouth on each dot. Each dot is a person calling out, "Great is Diana". When all the children's dots look like faces, have them put one on the tip of each finger. As you narrate the story have them pretend that one finger is Demetrius. When he talks about not being able to sell Diana idols anymore, have the children wiggle that finger and say, "Great is Diana". Assign 3 more fingers the role of idol-makers. When they begin to shout, "Great is Diana" have the children wiggle those fingers (while still wiggling Demetrius) and say, "Great is Diana". Continue adding fingers as the mob grows larger and larger. Have them keep their fingers wiggling as far as possible until the end of the story. Call their attention to how tired they are, and they haven't even been doing it half as long as the people in the story did. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - IDOL KNOCK DOWN Materials needed: The idols made in the Getting Their Attention Activity (You need 10) A nerf ball or other small round rubber ball Shelf (put up at Kindergarten eye-level size for lining the idols up on in a horizontal row) Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make up extra idols if you will not have 10 from the Getting Their Attention exercise. Set a shelf up in front of a wall but not right up to the wall. Line the idols up in a horizontal row across the shelf. (The children will take turns throwing the ball and trying to knock an idol off the shelf onto the floor.) WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Read and repeat it several times together. Have the children line up opposite the shelf (approximately 8 - 10 feet back from it). You might want to put up a piece of styro foam or a felt board to protect the wall behind the shelf when the ball hits it. Explain to the children that we want to get rid of these ten idols. In order to be able to knock one out, a child must say the memory verse. Then they may have one turn to throw the ball at an idol and try to knock it off the shelf. When all ten idols are down the activity is over. Remind the children that only by worshiping God can we get rid of idols in our lives. We cannot get rid of Satan by ourselves. As we love and worship the one true God every day, He gets rid of Satan and his tricks for us. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - GETTING RID OF IDOLS Materials needed: Idol figure on p. 30 of the Kindergarten quarterly (enlarge and xerox one for each child) Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Enlarge and xerox a copy of the idol on p. 30 in the Kindergarten quarterly for each child. Cut them out ahead of time or allow enough time for each child to cut theirs out. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child an idol figure. Ask them if they have ever seen one before. (Most will respond negatively) Have them turn the idol over. What is an idol? Something that you love very much. You believe you need it to be happy. Help the children think of some things that could become idols. Your toys could become idols. When you'd rather play with them instead of having worship or prayer. (WRITE TOYS ON THE BACK OF THE IDOL FIGURE) Your friends could become idols. If you'd rather listen to their suggestions then do what you know Jesus wants you to do. (WRITE FRIENDS ON THE BACK OF THE IDOL FIGURE) Have the children pray with you asking Jesus to be the one and only true God in their life. Cut the idol figures up in pieces and throw them away. Remind the children that they need to ask for Jesus' help every day when getting rid of idols.
