****************************************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, October 30, 1999 From: NAD Children’s Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: September 15, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, HEALED BY JESUS ****************************************************************************** Lesson Aim: Jesus cares when we are sad or hurt. Memory Verse: “Nothing is impossible with God.” Luke 1:37, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - POSSIBLE/IMPOSSIBLE OBJECT LESSON (A visual & kinesthetic activity) Materials needed: Ice cubes (one for each child) Thread (6" piece for each child) Small paper plates (one for each child) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Try the following experiment several times, so you are assured that it works. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: 1. Give each child a paper plate with an ice cube on it and a piece of 6" thread. 2. Ask them if they think they can lift the ice cube off the plate without touching it using only the piece of thread. (Can’t tie a knot in the thread either) 3. Most of them will try and scoop up the ice cube by putting the thread under it. 4. If they will let the ice cube just sit on the thread for several seconds the thread will adhere to the surface of the ice. You can then gently lift the ice off the plate holding both ends of the thread. What seemed impossible actually wasn’t when the conditions were right. Sometimes it may seem like there are things that are impossible even for God to fix. In our Bible story and memory verse we will learn that nothing is impossible with God. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - FRUIT & VEGETABLE STORY (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Meat platter or tray Tin foil Raisins Celery stick Peanuts Two carrot sticks Lettuce leaf Two bananas An apple WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Spread a piece of tin foil over the platter or tray. Peel the carrot sticks. Cut the celery stalk up from the bottom so that the leaf part is still intact but the stick is only about 6" tall. Wash the celery stalk, lettuce leaf and apple. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Explain to the children that they’re going to help you re-create the story with fruits and vegetables. (Refer to Jesus in the story but don’t try to substitute Him with a fruit or vegetable.) As you narrate the story have the children add the following to the tray: 1. Add the celery stick as the centurion. (The leafy part is his helmet) 2. Count out 100 raisins to add around him as his soldiers. 3. Add the carrot stick behind him as his sick servant 4. Add peanuts all around as the crowd. 5. Away from that scene on the other side of the tray add the lettuce leaf as the dead man’s bier. 6. Add the other carrot stick as the dead man. 7. Add more peanuts as the crowd. 8. Cut the two bananas into four pieces and lift the “bier” up onto the banana pieces which are the man carrying the bier. 9. Add the apple as the widow. When the story is over the pieces can be eaten as desired. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE TOWER (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Building blocks Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Explain that they’re going to build a tower. How many blocks is it possible to add to the tower before it topples? Each child must repeat the memory verse before adding a block. Repeat the activity several times until each child knows the memory verse well. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - WITNESSING MAGNETS Materials needed: Leftover scraps of sign magnet (stores that sell magnetic signs are happy to donate scraps) Cookie cutters (simple, large shapes without detail) Pencils Scissors Markers WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Explain to the children that the magnets they’re going to make are for giving away. Everybody, including adults, need to be reminded that nothing is impossible with God. 1. Help the children choose some cookie cutters to trace around on the white side of the magnet. 2. Cut out the shapes (choose shapes that are simple and without detail. Just drawing plain squares, ovals and circles is sufficient) 3. Print the memory verse, Nothing is Impossible with God, on the white side of the magnet shape with the markers. 4. Help each child make as many as possible to share.
