****************************************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, October 16, 1999 From: NAD Children’s Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: September 15, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, JESUS TAKES CARE OF US ****************************************************************************** Lesson Aim: Jesus cares for us. Memory Verse: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.” Psa. 23:1, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - ANIMAL MASKS (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Large rubber bands (Large enough to go around a Kindergarten child’s head) Hole punch Poster board Markers Black pom-poms OR black yarn OR black felt (will be used as a bear’s nose) Gold yarn Broom whisks OR anything else to use as stiff whiskers for a lion Brown felt OR any other soft material to be used as bear fur Wool batting (to be used as sheep’s wool on head) Brown construction paper (to cut out ram’s horns) Scissors Glue WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Trace and cut out basic head outlines of a bear, lion and sheep. Cut enough outlines so that each child in the class will have one. They should be large enough to cover a Kindergartner’s face. On the face side of the outline draw some features for the children to trace over with markers or glue parts on to. (For example - shade around an area for children to add brown felt on bear’s head, leave circle place for gluing pom-pom nose. Draw where whiskers should be glued onto lion, show where mane should be glued; shade around an area for children to add wool batting for sheep’s head and give instruction where ram’s horns can be added if desired.) Cut up gold yarn into pieces for mane; Cut up brown felt so it fits basic bear head; draw and cut out ram’s horns on brown construction paper. Eye holes will need to be cut out in class because of the different size heads and placement of eyes. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have each child choose a bear, lion or sheep and make an animal mask, filling in or adding features as called for. After measuring each child’s face cut eye hole slits into the mask. Punch holes in each side and tie rubber band to holes or hot glue the cut rubber band to each side of the mask. Use the masks to go straight into the Bible story and next getting into scripture activity. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - STORY DRAMATIZATION (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Masks from previous activity (If you didn’t make any it may be possible to buy some since Halloween is right around the corner) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children wear their masks and act out the animal parts as you tell them the Bible story. Place the lions and bears in strategic locations of the room ready to spring out when you (the shepherd) and your sheep walk by. Have the sheep stay near you, eating and drinking and being cared for by you as the story dictates. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE TOSS (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: A sheep or lamb (beanie baby, OR stuffed animal OR home-made bean bag in sheep shape) Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Have them stand in a circle then spread out. Say the memory verse then toss the sheep to one of the children in the circle. They say the verse and toss the sheep to another child. Continue in this manner until everyone has had a chance to repeat the verse. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - SHEPHERD & SHEEP GAME Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Designate one child as the shepherd. All the rest of the children in the group are sheep. Have the shepherd cover his eyes while the sheep hide. With his eyes covered the shepherd calls “sheep”. All the children have to answer, “baa-baa”. The shepherd listens closely and tries to identify where a sheep is hiding and which sheep it is. If he guesses correctly, the sheep must come to him, and tell him one way a shepherd would take care of him. He then becomes the shepherd and the sheep re-hide. If he guessed incorrectly, he can try calling the sheep again. Give each shepherd three turns to find a sheep before picking a new shepherd. At the end of the game, sit down and talk about how Jesus uses some of the very same methods to care for us.
