****************************************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, October 2, 1999 From: NAD Children’s Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: September 15, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, JESUS PREACHES A SERMON ****************************************************************************** Lesson Aim: We can witness for Jesus by being kind to others. Memory Verse: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life.....’” John 14:6, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - BALLOON BLESSINGS (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Balloons (Only 3 different colors; one for each child)(Helium quality) Colored ribbon (Enough to tie to each balloon) Brown, black, gold or yellow yarn Large wiggly eyes Black marker Glue Helium tank (Party supply stores will blow the balloons up for a modest fee in lieu of a tank) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Blow up the balloons and tie ribbons on the end. Make the ribbons long enough for the children to be able to grab a balloon to pull it down. Release the balloons with the colors mixed up all over the room. Cut the colored yarn into various lengths for children to glue on as hair. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Tell the children you are looking for people who are pure, merciful and peacemakers. Do not explain what the words mean. Just ask them to choose which they would like to look for. The children who choose pure people look for one color of balloon and bring them back. The children who choose merciful people look for a second color of balloon and bring them all back. The children who choose peacemakers look for the third color of balloon and return to their seats with them. Have the children make their balloon look like them by adding yarn hair, wiggly eyes and a nose and mouth added with a marker. Jesus says people who receive God’s blessing will be like these balloon people. They will be pure, which means they will let Jesus help them stay away from sinful ugly things. They will be merciful, which means they will be kind and understanding of others. And they will be peacemakers, which means they will look for ways to help others get along well. Tie all the balloons together in a bunch. When you put pure people, merciful people and peacemakers altogether, what do you have? You have a much nicer place to live in. Jesus wants to help us make this world a nicer place to live. Keep the balloons together until the end of Sabbath school, then give each child their balloon to take home. (If you have time, write the three words, pure, merciful and peacemaker on the back of each child’s balloon. Point to the words and tell them what they say.) GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BUILDING A WELL (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: 12 bricks OR 12 blocks of wood Bathroom trash can Plastic trash bag liner Soup dipper Water Disposable cups WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Line the trash can with the liner. Set the bricks or blocks in a pile nearby. In the quarterly circle all the following words: well, Samaritan, Jew. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children sit in a circle around the trash can. Explain to them that they are going to help you “build a well”. They are to listen closely to the story. Whenever they hear the words, well, Samaritan or Jew, they raise their hand. They’ll retrieve a brick or block and lay it around the bucket. When the story is finished and all the bricks or blocks have been used, fill the can with water. Have each child dip out a cup for themselves. Talk about what Jesus had to offer that was better than water for the body. (He offered eternal life which is something that you can enjoy forever.) GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - THREE GOOD THINGS WRAPPED UP IN ONE (A multi- sensory activity) Materials needed: Popsicle sticks (one for each child) Velcro Hoe Glue Gun (For teacher use only) Permanent marker Brown felt White felt Gold felt Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) The children are going to make felt “ice cream bars”. Each child needs a piece of brown and white felt, cut the same size, to represent the ice cream and chocolate shell of an ice cream bar. (Bell-shaped, straight across bottom, slanted up with round curve at top.) Each child also needs a small rectangle piece of gold felt to represent the candy middle on the very inside of the ice cream bar. On the brown pieces of felt write the word, way. On the white pieces of felt write the word, truth and on the gold pieces of felt write the word, life. Cut small pieces of velcro (two sets) for each child. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Explain the meaning of the verse. When we let Jesus show us His way, He will make sure we know everything that is true and that will lead us to eternal life or living forever with Him. Ask the children how many of them like Polar bars or ice cream on a stick? Ask them if they have ever had the kind that has three parts all in one? Chocolate shell on the outside, white vanilla ice cream on the inside and further in a hard hunk of chocolate candy. Which is their favorite part? It’s fun to eat those ice creams because one thing leads to another. After you’ve eaten one good layer your ready for the next. Give each child a popsicle stick. Have them glue their gold rectangle to the stick. Glue a piece of velcro (not the furry piece) on top of the gold rectangle. Glue the furry piece to match on top of the piece of white felt. On the other side of the white felt glue the other piece of velcro that is not furry. On the piece of brown felt glue the furry piece to match. Review and learn the memory verse using the ice creams. The first thing Jesus is, is the way. (Peel off the brown felt) By following His way, we can know what’s true because He is truth. (Peel off the white felt) When we follow God’s way and know the truth we have eternal life. (Observe the orange felt together) ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - BALLOON LAUNCH Materials needed: Balloons from Getting Their Attention Activity WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child their balloon to hold. Read them the following statements. If they think the child in the scenario is being kind, they let their balloons go up to the ceiling. If not, they hang onto them. 1. Julie comforts her friend when she hurts herself on the playground. (She’s being merciful) 2. John tells lies about Sam because he doesn’t want his best friend to like Sam more than him. 3. Cindy tells her friend she can’t watch a certain program on TV because it teaches things she knows are wrong. (She’s being pure) 4. Anthony settles an argument between his brother and sister so their fighting doesn’t wake dad up. (He’s being a peacemaker) 5. Sharon shares her dog with Sue by letting her help feed it and walk it. Sue can’t have a dog because she lives in an apartment. (She’s being merciful) You can make up more scenarios as your time and the children’s interest permits.
