****************************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, September 18, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: July 25, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, PETER AND JOHN FOLLOW JESUS ****************************************************************** Lesson Aim: Jesus calls us to help others find Him. Memory Verse: "I have summoned you by name; you are mine." Isa. 43:1, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - GOING FISHIN (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: (6) sheets of colored construction paper (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple) Outline of a fish to use as a pattern One hairnet for each child Scissors Permanent marker Large piece of blue felt or a large blue sheet WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Trace fish onto the six sheets of colored construction paper. You will need enough so that each child will have one fish of each color. Cut them out. On one side of each fish write the memory verse words in the following order: Red fish - I have Orange fish - summoned Yellow fish - you Green fish - by name Blue fish - you are Purple fish - mine. Isa. 43:1 Lay out the felt or sheet to represent a lake. Scatter the "fish" all over the sheet. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children gather around the "lake". Give them each a hairnet. They need to catch one color of each fish in their net. They cannot touch the "lake". Give them 2-3 minutes to try. At the end of the activity ask them if they felt frustrated. Give each child a color of each fish and have them return to their seats. Have them put the net and fish under their seats until they are used again during memory verse time. In our story today there are some very big fishermen who are frustrated. They have been out all night and have not caught any fish either. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE SORT Materials needed: Fish from above activity (Each child needs their six) Six baskets Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Set the six baskets in front of the children in a horizontal row. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. They can put their fish in the correct order so the memory verse can be read if they lay them down according to how the colors are seen in a rainbow. (Red - orange - yellow - green - blue - purple) Explain to the children that after fishermen catch fish they sort them according to size. Then they sell them for different prices. Have the children learn the memory verse by sorting their fish according to color. Call for the red fish to be brought up and put into the first basket. Learn the words, "I have" of the memory verse. Call for each color of fish in order having the children place them in the basket, saying the memory verse words that go with them. After all the fish are in the baskets, ask the children to retrieve them according to what words they represented. (For example - Which fish are in the basket, "summoned"?) (Which fish are in the basket "you are") Keep putting the fish in and out of the baskets until the verse is well learned. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - FISHING FOR PEOPLE (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: (1) dowel stick (at least three feet long) Piece of yarn (6-10 feet long) Piece of blue felt or blue sheet (used in Getting Their Attention activity) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: Tie the piece of yarn onto one end of the dowel stick to make a "fishing pole". Spread the blue felt or blue sheet out at one end of the room. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Select one volunteer to be the first "fisherman". The rest of the children are the fishes. They sit on the blue sheet or felt with their backs facing the fisherman. Before beginning the activity talk about what it means to be fishers of men. (Jesus wants us to use any chance we get to let other people know who He is and what He's like.) What are some of the different ways we can let people know what Jesus is like? The first fisherman casts his line toward the fish. Whoever the yarn string falls on comes to the fisherman and the fisherman tells him/her one thing about who Jesus is, what He is like or what He has done for us. The "fish" who has been caught becomes the "fisherman" and casts the line toward the fish. The object of the activity is to see how many fish can be caught and how many ways we can learn to be fishers of men. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - Materials needed: Music and words to the song, "I Will Make You Fishers of Men" Piano player or cassette recorder and pre-recorded tape Musical instruments (drums, cymbals, sticks, bells castanets, sand blocks etc.) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children form a vertical line. Designate one child as the leader. Help each child select a musical instrument. Sing the song and march around the room in a parade fashion until everyone knows the song well.
