At the end of the riddle select a child to guess what the answer is to the riddle. (In parenthesis after every riddle) When they guess correctly, they draw it out of the bag and put it on. After the activity is finished, say to the children, "In our story today there is a pool with many people beside it. No one has any of these things on and no one seems to be having a good time. Let's see why. RIDDLES We're going to the pool We're going to the pool To try and stay cool To try and stay cool What shall we take What shall we wear So we don't bake? (Toys) GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - PIPE CLEANER STORY PLAY (A multi- sensory activity) Materials needed: 3 pipe cleaners for each child (1) 3" wide by 6" high square piece of material (choose something that is flimsey and stays rolled.) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Except for preparing each child's materials there are no other advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give the introduction to the lesson down to the part before the story begins to describe the crippled man by the pool. After giving the description of the man, show the children how to loop the pipe cleaner around to fashion a head with the remaining body hanging down. Using a second pipe cleaner make arms, but do not add the legs yet. That's how we will signify that he is crippled. Show them how the man's bedroll may have looked and instruct them to make their man a bedroll with their material. (A pillow followed by the rest of the material being extended) Continue on with the story. When Jesus heals the man, attach legs onto the man using the third pipe cleaner. Roll the bedroll up and tuck it under one of the man's arms. Encourage the children to take their men and bedrolls home and share the story with their family and friends. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE RED LIGHT/GREEN LIGHT (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Talk about what it means to be lawful. (It is acceptable; within the boundaries or rules) When you drive a car there are many laws or rules that you have to obey. Ask the children what some of those laws are. One of the laws is that you have to obey the traffic signal. What does red mean? What does green mean? Our memory verse tells us that it is always keeping the law to do good on the Sabbath. Help the children commit the memory verse to memory before beginning the game. Line the children up in a horizontal row at the back of the room. You stand facing them at the front of the room. Remind them that the game of red light/ green light is played by you turning around and saying "green light". At that point they may move slowly or quickly toward your direction. As soon as you say "red light" you may turn around and face the children. Anyone moving at all when you turn to face them goes all the way back to the beginning and starts over. In this memory verse version, you say "green light" and turn your back towards the children. They move toward your direction. When you say "red light" and turn around, anyone caught moving repeats the memory verse instead of going back to the beginning. If they cannot repeat the memory verse, they return to the beginning. The winner is not the child who reaches you first, rather any children making it all the way to you. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE -SABBATH COUPONS Materials needed: Traffic violation ticket (optional) (1) sheet of 8 1/2 by 11" paper for each child (1) sheet of construction paper for each child Stapler Stickers WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) With a pen mark off each child's 8 « by 11" paper into four pieces that measure 2" high by 5" long. Cut out two pieces of construction paper with the same measurements. On each sheet of white paper print the following: This coupon can be used as a reminder to do one good and kind thing today. ____________________________________________________________ HAVE A HAPPY SABBATH! On one of the pieces of construction paper print the memory verse. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: If you have brought along a traffic violation ticket show it to the children. Ask them if they know what it is. Tickets are given when people violate or break a rule. When Jesus was living on this earth the priests and temple leaders had many rules made up for the Sabbath. There were many many things people could not do on Sabbath. There was no joy and happiness on Sabbath because of that. Jesus came to show us how to enjoy Sabbath and keep it holy. Instead of giving out tickets to people who broke Sabbath He showed them what they could do. His favorite thing was helping people. Help the children make a Sabbath coupon book. It will contain four coupons that will remind them about kind and helpful things they can do for others on the Sabbath. 1. Have the children cut along the lines to separate their four coupons. (Younger children may need help.) 2. Place a construction paper cover with the memory verse on it on top of the coupons and a blank construction paper cover on the back. Staple everything together. 3. Ask the children for ideas for filling in the blanks on the coupons. Write their ideas on the lines and have them decorate the rest of the coupon with stickers. Encourage them to take the book home, rip out a coupon and try it that very afternoon.
