***************************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, August 28, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: July 25, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, STRANGE NOISES IN THE CHURCH ***************************************************************** Lesson Aim: Jesus wants me to be reverent in His house. Memory Verse: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son." John 3:16 GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - CRITTER CALLS (An auditory activity) Materials needed: Pre-recorded tape with animal sounds on it (They don't have to be authentic; make your own.), a cassette player. WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Other than the animal sounds tape there are no other preparations necessary ahead of time. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children close their eyes. Tell them they are going on a walk with you to discover some animals. Give them a couple of clues about each animal such as where they are hiding (on land or in the water) whether they are furry or smooth-skinned, what color they are etc. Then play the recording of the animal's sound. After they have guessed correctly move onto the next one. SAY: In our story today Jesus and His helpers heard lots of animal noises. The only problem was they were coming from the temple church and they weren't just there for people to enjoy looking at. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE SABBATH BAG (A visual and kinesthetic activity) Materials needed: 2 pieces of fabric for each child, plain and light-colored (size: 18" high by 12" wide) 1 per child 24" piece of string or shoe string for each child Stencils of animals or other nature objects Fabric crayons Permanent marker WHAT THE TEACHER DOES AHEAD: Make each child a quiet bag for church by sewing, right sides together, the bottom and two sides of the fabric pieces. Fold down a half inch of the open edge and crease with a warm iron. Then fold down another one inch and press. Stitch close to the lower crease, leaving one inch open. Stitch again half an inch above the first stitching, but this time stich completely around. Insert the string for a drawstring closure. (For large Sabbath schools ask volunteers to sponsor and make a quiet bag for one child in the class. Most adults will jump at the chance to give children something to use during the church service.) Write the memory verse across the bottom of the bag with fine-tip permanent marker or fabric crayon. (Or collect large office envelopes instead of making a bag. Let the kids decorate their envelopes.) WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children choose several shapes from off the stencil. Trace them onto their bag and have them use the fabric crayons to color them in. (Or let the draw pictures and color them.) Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible and why it is such an important one to learn and remember. The Sabbath bags will have items added to them later in the program. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE PUZZLE FOR SABBATH BAG Materials needed: 1 piece of colored craft foam for each child (pastel shades) Permanent marker Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut each child's craft foam into six puzzle pieces. On the left-hand top corner piece write the number 4 followed by the word "God". On the top middle piece write the word "so", then draw a heart beside it. On the right-hand top corner piece draw a globe or picture of the world. On the left-hand bottom corner piece write the word He then draw a gift box. On the middle bottom piece write the word "his" and draw the numeral "1" beside it. On the bottom right-hand piece draw or glue on a picture of an infant. Cut each child's puzzle pieces apart and place in a bag. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Help the children find the memory verse in the Bible. Allow everyone time to work their puzzle alone. Help them "read" the pictures and learn the verse. After each child has learned this very important verse, have them put the pieces back in the plastic bag and place it in the memory verse Sabbath bag they decorated. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - PACKING FOR GOD'S HOUSE Materials needed: Any items appropriate for church use that would fit in their Sabbath bag such as: Puppets Crayons/Nature or spiritual coloring books Religious books Puzzles Felts Religious games Any items that would be more appropriate for weekday use such as: Secular coloring pictures or books. Religious and nature coloring pictures and books Secular games or cards Balls, yo-yo's, jump rope WHAT THE TEACHER DOES IN CLASS: (To prepare ahead) Dump the above items in the center of the room. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: They take turns retrieving something from the pile that they feel is appropriate for a Sabbath bag. After all the items have been chosen or rejected allow the children to choose at least one thing from the chosen pile to put in their Sabbath bags to take home for keeps. Encourage them to find things at home that would be appropriate to add to their bag and to bring it to church. YOU MIGHT ALSO INCLUDE A LETTER TO PARENTS WITH THE SABBATH BAG TO EXPLAIN HOW THEY CAN ENCOURAGE REVERENCE WITH THEIR CHILDREN.
