****************************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, August 21, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: July 25, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, JESUS HELPS AT A WEDDING ****************************************************************** Lesson Aim: I am happy when I am kind to others. Memory Verse: "Do whatever he tells you." John 2:5, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - MAKING GRAPE JUICE (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Bunch of Concord grapes (or any other juice-making grapes) Wire-mesh strainer Wooden spoon Drinking glass (one for each child) Can of frozen grape juice Pitcher Water Apron or smock for each child Newspaper Bowl WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Spread the newspaper out on the floor. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have each child put on a smock or apron that completely covers their clothes. Have them sit in a circle around the newspaper. Explain to them that there are several ways to make grape juice. Give each child a turn mashing grapes around in the wire-mesh strainer. Pour any juice into a glass. Comment on how hard and how much time it made to make so little juice. Next, let them assist you in making juice out of the frozen can. Share some grape juice with each child in the class. SAY: In the story today Jesus makes grape juice for some wedding guests. He doesn't use either of these methods that we USED. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE GRAPE RELAY (A visual & kinesthetic activity) Materials needed: Bunch of seedless grapes Toothpicks Bowl A visual or audible timer such as a sand hour-glass or kitchen timer Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Place the bowl on a table at one end of the room. At the opposite end, place the grapes, toothpicks and timer. Pull all the grapes off the stem and place them in a bowl or on a napkin. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Repeat it together several times. Have the children form a vertical line next to the grapes, toothpicks and timer. Explain to the children that they will take a toothpick, stab it into a grape, carry it down to the bowl and lay it in the bowl, toothpick and all. After they deposit the grape in the bowl, they repeat the memory verse. They then hurry back to the line and the next child takes a turn. Before beginning show the children the timer. Encourage them to try and get all the grapes into the bowl before the time runs out. If you feel your group is too young to enjoy "beating the time" challenge them instead to see if the class working together can get all the grapes into the bowl. After the game is over sit down together and enjoy the grapes while talking about what it means to "do whatever Jesus tells us to do". ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - KINDNESS CLUB (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Poster board Cardboard Safety pins Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks Markers Stickers Hole punch WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut the poster board into squares the same size as a credit card. On the cards write the following: _________________is a member of the Kindness Club Around the entire edge of the card make dots with a permanent marker. Cut circle discs out of the cardboard about the size of spray paint can lids. Cut one out for each child. On each disc outline the words, KINDNESS CLUB in block lettering. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Explain to the children that they are going to join the Kindness Club this week. The Kindness Club looks for kind surprises to do to make others happy. In order to be an official member of this club, they must make themselves a club pin and a club passport. To make a club pin: 1. Color in the block lettering with markers. 2. Decorate remainder of pin with stickers 3. (Teacher) Hot glue safety pin on back To make a passport: 1. Write name on blank line of poster board passports. Encourage the children to look for kindnesses to do this week and to bring their passports back to Sabbath school with them next week. As they report the kindnesses they have done you will hole-punch out one of the dots around the periphery for each kindness. This activity may stretch out over more than one week. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - Materials needed: Cans of real or play food Grocery sacks Play steering wheel or a paper plate cut into the shape of a steering wheel Small lamp Rocking chair Small area rug Chalkboard School books WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Set-up four stations: the home, the school, the grocery store and the car. Place the cans of food and grocery sacks in the grocery store; the chalk- board and school books in the school; the small lamp, rocking chair and area rug in the home; place four chairs together to represent the front and back seat of a car; place the steering wheel in the left- front seat of the car. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children visit the stations with you deciding what they represent. Ask for ideas on what kind things can be done at each of these stations. (Example: the car - Let someone else have an extra turn near the window, help mom and dad roll up the windows, help pick-up trash and clean out the car etc.)
