******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, August 18, 2001 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: July 31, 2001 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, AFRAID OF GIANTS ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: If we remember all that God has done for us, we will not be afraid for the future. Memory Verse: "The Lord watches over all who love him." Ps. 145:20, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - SPIES IN THE LAND Materials needed: Small pieces of paper (one piece for each child in the group) Magnifying glass Pencil Bunch of grapes WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On small pieces of paper draw one object in the room on each paper. Draw it very, very small. (Example: Draw a tiny cupboard, a tiny table, a tiny chalkboard or bulletin board etc.) These are clue papers that will be hidden for the children to find. Make enough clue papers so that each child will have an opportunity to find and examine one. Put the first clue paper in your pocket. Whatever is drawn on that first clue paper is where the children go to look for the next clue paper. Hide the next clue at that spot. Keep hiding all the clue papers at the places indicated by the drawings. At the last secret spot place the bunch of grapes. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Explain to the children that they will be spies. A spy is someone who looks for clues that will give him important information about a secret. You have a secret to share with them this morning. It is somewhere in the room. The only way for them to find it is to follow the clues. The children will stay together as a group. Give them the first clue from your pocket. Have a child use the magnifying glass to try and discover what is drawn on the clue paper. Then they go as a group to that object in the room. Another child looks for the second clue paper and using the magnifying glass they discover where the third clue is. This continues until all the clues have been discovered. The last clue will lead them to the bunch of grapes. As you share grapes together say, "In our Bible story today there are ten spies who look for clues in the Promised Land. Listen closely and you will hear about grapes also." GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY BOOK Materials needed: Polaroid camera & film Basket of fruit (including bunches of grapes) Stick (to hang grapes on) Bible dress-up clothes (robes, ties, head pieces) Flowers (real or artificial) Building blocks (6) sheets of construction paper Stapler Glue WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Place the basket of fruit somewhere in the room. Hang the grapes over the stick. Place the flowers somewhere in the room. Place the blocks somewhere in the room. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Explain to the children that they are going to go and spy out the Promised Land. Have them dress up in robes, ties and head pieces. Tell them they are going to take pictures of what they see in the Promised Land, so they can tell the Israelites what they found. Take the following pictures as you move from spot to spot narrating the story as you go. 1. You, the teacher, take a picture of the children as a group of "spies". 2. Sneak to the block area. Have the children build a high wall. Have a child take a picture of the "wall". Take is close enough so that the wall looks big in the picture. 3. Sneak to the fruit. Have a child take a picture of all the children holding a piece of fruit high in their hands smiling. 4. Have a child take a picture of two children with the stick between them on their shoulders with the grapes hanging from it. Get close enough to see the grapes well. 5. Sneak to the flowers. Have a child take a picture of the flowers. 6. Take a picture of the children sitting on the floor looking sad and dejected. (Because they cannot enter the Promised Land) Have the children return to a table with you and assemble the Bible Story book. Put the pictures in order, one to a page on the construction papers. Have the children glue a picture to each page. Review the story with them using the "Bible story book" that you just made to help them recall the events of the story. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - Materials needed: Green craft foam Purple craft foam Card stock paper (1 sheet per 2 children) Scissors Glue sticks Magnetic tape Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Fold the card stock paper in half. On each half draw a grape cluster using a quarter to trace around for each grape. The cluster should contain nine grapes. Draw a vine across the top. Cut out nine quarter-size circles from the purple craft foam for each child. Cut out a green vine stem for each child from the green craft foam. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Repeat it several times together. Give them nine grapes and the vine to glue onto their card stock pattern paper. Repeat the verse together pointing to a different grape for each word of the verse as you work your way down the vine. Add the magnetic tape to the back so it can be put on the refrigerator at home. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - BALLOON GIANTS Materials needed: Extra large balloons Tape Large-headed pin Permanent marker String WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Blow the balloons up. Tie them together to make a giant. (1 for the head, 2 for each arm, 2-3 for each leg, 1 for the abdomen. Tape them to the wall and arrange them so they look like a giant. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Remind the children how the Israelites in the Bible story today allowed giants in the Promised Land to scare them and make them forget that God was their leader. Jesus wants us to remember all the ways he has helped us and taken care of us. Then when new and scary things come along we can continue to trust Him for help. To get rid of the giant on the wall, the children are to think of ways Jesus has helped them before. When they think of something, they can take the large-headed pin and pop one of the balloons, anywhere they choose. Try and get rid of the whole giant before time runs out. Ideas to help them: (Make sure and explain that even though He uses our parents to supply these needs, He is the one making sure we have what we need.) Jesus has always made sure I had something to eat. Jesus has always made sure I had something to wear. Jesus has given me a doctor to go to and medicines to take when I'm sick. Jesus has given me songs to sing when I'm sad.
