******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Program Helps for the Sabbath School Lesson, July 7, 2001 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: June 15, 2001 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, WATER FLOWS FROM A ROCK ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: To encourage the children to trust in Jesus every day. Memory Verse: "His bread will be supplied, and water will not fail him." Isa. 33:16, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - WATER WORKS Materials needed: Wash cloths (one for each child) 2 basins filled with water A pitcher of water (one that a Kindergarten child can pour with) Sponge Dish drainer Towel Play dishes and baby doll clothes Plastic cups (one for each child) Stuffed animals Water dish (one like you'd use for giving pets a drink) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Set-up three learning stations apart from each other. At the first station place a basin of water, a towel with the dish drainer sitting on top, the sponge and the dishes and doll clothes. At the second station place another basin of water and a pile of clean wash cloths. At the third station place the pitcher of water, the cups, the stuffed animals and the water dish. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Divide the children into three small groups. At each station explain what they will do. At the first station they are to select either a dish or a piece of clothing to wash. They scrub it in the water and lay it in the dish drainer. At the second station they are to select a clean wash cloth, dip it in the water, wring it out and wash their face. (Provide a plastic bag to dump the used cloths in.) At the third station they are to pour some water into the pet's dish and some water into a cup for them to drink. (Someone will have to be at this station to empty the water from the pet's dish and keep filling the pitcher.) When each child is done within the small group they move to the next station. Each group is to try the activity at each station. Then reassemble as a large group and ask the following questions: 1. What did you need at each station in order to be able to do the activity? (Water) 2. What other things can you think of that we need water for? In our Bible story today the Israelites need water. They are walking in a very hot dry place. They need water to be able to do all the things you did today with water. They forget that God has always taken care of them and will keep doing that. Let's see what happens. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY JOURNEY Materials needed: Saltine crackers Bible times dress-up clothes (substitute bathrobes, pillowcases and headbands, men's large shirts) Pitcher of cold water Drinking cups (one for each child) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Dress each child up as an Israelite. Give them all several Saltine crackers to eat. Tell them they must prepare for a long journey. The Israelites will have to walk many miles today to get across the hot dry desert as they head for Canaan. After each child is dressed and finished eating, take them outside and walk around and around the church property as you narrate the Bible story. Throughout the story emphasize how hot it is and how thirsty everyone is getting. (The Saltines should have helped in that respect.) When the story is over return to the classroom for a refreshing drink of water. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE ROUND-ROBIN Materials needed: Small loaf of raisin bread or homemade bread A small bottled water Bibles Piano player or cassette recorder WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children sit in a circle in their chairs. Show them where the memory verse is found in their Bible. Repeat it together several times. Place the loaf of bread in one child's lap and the bottled water across the circle in another child's lap. When the music begins playing they pass what they have in their lap around to the right. The passing continues until the music stops. Whoever is holding the loaf of bread when the music stops needs to repeat the first half of the memory verse, "His bread will be supplied....." Whoever is holding the bottled water when the music stops repeats the second half of the verse, "and water will not fail him." as soon as the child holding the loaf of bread is finished repeating the first half. (Cut the music so that each child gets a turn repeating both halves of the verse.) ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - TUMBLER TRUST Materials needed: White plastic tumblers Permanent markers WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Write the words, "I trust Jesus to give me what I need." on each cup with a permanent black marker. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a tumbler to decorate with permanent markers. Read the words to the children. As they decorate discuss everyday things we can trust Jesus to give us. Encourage the children to take the cups home and every time they use them, they are to remember how God brought water from a rock. He is just as eager to do for us and care for us as He was back then.
