****************************************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, July 3, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: June 15, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, THE SURPRISE BABY ****************************************************************************** Lesson Aim: God keeps His promises. Memory Verse: "I will teach you in the way you should go." Psa. 32:8, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - SPECIAL OCCASIONS (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: 5 brown grocery bags Several balloons Birthday candles Cake mix X-mas wrapping paper Empty shirt or shoe box X-mas balls or lights Back-pack Pencils, scissors, crayons (or any items used at school) Small overnight case, slippers, toothbrush Sunglasses, suntan lotion, beach toys WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Place the items from the materials list into the five grocery bags as follows: Bag #1 - balloons, birthday candles and cake mix Bag #2 - X-mas wrapping paper, box, balls or lights Bag #3 - Back-pack, school supplies Bag #4 - Overnight case, slippers, toothbrush Bag #5 - Sunglasses, suntan lotion, beach toys On the front of each bag write the words, SPECIAL OCCASION WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Call five volunteers to the front. Produce the five bags and explain that each bag represents a special occasion. A special occasion is something that is going to happen that you really look forward to. The bags have items in them that tell about a special occasion that is going to happen. Each child at the front chooses a bag. The child with bag #1 calls 3 more volunteers to the front to each take an item from the paper bag. They decide after looking at the items what special occasion is going to happen. Ask the children what preparations will be necessary in order to be ready for that occasion? Continue in the same manner with all the paper bags. If your Sabbath school is small, reduce the number of volunteers used. In our story today a special occasion is almost about to happen. But before it can happen God sends someone to help the people get ready. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - PREPARING FOR THE PROMISE (An auditory & kinesthetic activity) Materials needed: Masking tape Picture of Baby Jesus in the manger Rubber band WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Roll the picture of Baby Jesus in the manger up and secure it with a rubber band. Place it in the middle of the floor. With the masking tape, mark off nine steps, each about 1 foot apart moving away from the picture vertically. Go back to the rolled picture. Going the opposite direction mark off four steps with the tape also about 1 foot apart moving away from the picture vertically. In the lesson quarterly, put a circle around the word promise whenever it occurs in the story (include any derivatives; there should be nine altogether not including the one in the prayer at the end.) Draw a line under the word prepare whenever it occurs in the story (there should be four altogether.) WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Split the children into two groups. One group stands in a horizontal row right below the ninth tape marking (the one furthest from the rolled picture). The other group stands in a horizontal row right below the fourth tape marking (the one furthest from the rolled picture). The children are to listen in the story for the words promise and prepare. When the word promise is mentioned, the group near the ninth tape marking moves up to the ninth tape and stands there. When they hear the word again, they move up as a group to the next tape marking, the eighth. They continue until they get to the fifth tape marking away from the rolled picture. The other group who has been listening for the word prepare will then begin to move closer to the rolled picture as they hear their word mentioned. By the end of the story both groups should be face-to-face at the rolled picture. Ask them what promise from God was everyone to be preparing for in the Bible story today? (The picture is unrolled and the answer discovered) GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE BIBLE (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: One 10" tall by 8" wide square of black felt for each child One 6" tall by 1" wide rectangle of red felt for each child Felt glue One sheet of plain white paper WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Measure and cut out each child's felt pieces. Fold the black felt in half and iron, so it opens and shuts like a book. On the sheet of plain white paper make five shapes; a square, a circle, a triangle, a rectangle and an oval. Inside the square write the first two words of the memory verse. Inside the circle write the third and fourth words. Inside the triangle write the fifth and sixth words. Inside the rectangle write the seventh and eighth words. Inside the oval write the ninth and tenth words. Xerox this sheet so each child as the five symbols. Cut them out. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the verse is found in the Bible. Give each child a black felt piece, a red felt piece and the five shapes with verse words written on them. Help the children glue the red felt rectangle on the inside of the Bible on the left as close to the fold as possible. This is the "bookmark" in their Bibles. Teach them the verse and its order by calling out the different shapes and having them lay them in order inside their "felt bible". Talk about how God wants to teach each of us what to do. His promises and words of instruction are found in His word, the Bible. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Practice singing the memory verse to the tune of "Are You Sleeping" Follow this key for word substitution. Are You Sleeping I Will Teach You Are You Sleeping I Will Teach You Brother John In the Way Brother John In the Way Morning Bells Are Ringing You Shou------------ld Go Morning Bells Are Ringing You Shou------------ld Go Ding Dong Ding Psa. 32 8 Ding Dong Ding Psa. 32 8 WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Teach the children the memory verse in song. Since this is a round the easiest way to teach it is by you singing the first phrase of each section and having them echo you with the repeat second phrase. When they are familiar with it, divide the group in half. Have one group be the first phrase singers and the second group be the echo.
