****************************************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, June 26, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: May 1, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, A TERRIBLE TRIAL ****************************************************************************** Lesson Aim: No matter what troubles come to use, Jesus still loves us. Memory Verse: "I will be with him in trouble......." Psa. 91:15, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - A JAR FULL OF TROUBLES (An auditory activity) Materials needed: Small baby food jar Marbles OR jellybeans or something of similar size to fill baby food jar with WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Punch a hole in the lid of the baby food jar large enough for the objects you have chosen to fill the jar with to fit through. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Tell the children that we are going to try and fit all the troubles we can think of in one jar. Sit in a circle and pass the jar around. Each time a child thinks of anything that could cause trouble or bring pain or sadness they add an object to the jar by dropping it through the top. Some suggestions for stimulating their thinking: 1. When I get in trouble at school a lot it causes problems. 2. When I fight with my brothers or sisters at home it causes problems. 3. When my parents fight about how much money we have that causes problems. 4. When someone gets very sick that I love it causes problems. 5. When I have to move away from people I love it causes problems. 6. When I have to go somewhere new and everyone is staring at me that causes problems. 7. When my mom or dad move out of the house and go live somewhere else that causes problems. When you have as many objects in the jar as possible, hold it up for all the children to see. What would you like to be able to do with all these problems or troubles? Throw them in the trash can? Throw them far out into the ocean? Wouldn't it be neat if we could get rid of all our problems or troubles that easily? We know that as long as we live on this sinful earth we cannot get rid of troubles and problems. The man in our story today has more than a jarful of troubles. But he teaches us an important lesson about God and troubles. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - STORY PUZZLE (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Four pieces of white poster board Markers Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Fold the four pieces of poster board in half. Cut a puzzle piece from each half of poster board so you end up with eight pieces of puzzle altogether. (It works better to use actual puzzle pieces when tracing the puzzle patterns onto the poster board.) On the puzzle pieces lightly trace with a pencil the following scenes: Puzzle piece 1 - A stick man to represent Job, an outline of a house, 10 stick figures to represent his children, an outline of a sheep, camel, donkey and cow. Puzzle piece 2 - Several stick figures to represent the Sabeans, a couple cow and donkeys with chains around their necks being led by the Sabean stick figures. Puzzle piece 3 - Several sheep figures, several stick figures to represent servants and "raindrops" cascading from the top of the poster board to represent the fire coming down from heaven. Puzzle piece 4 - Several camel figures, several stick figures to represent the servants and Chaldeans and chains around the necks of the camels led by the Chaldeans. Puzzle piece 5 - An outline of a standing house, an outline of a broken, fallen down house and stick figures lying on the ground to represent Job's children. Puzzle piece 6 - A stick figure with large sores covering his body. Puzzle piece 7 - A stick figure to represent Job and three additional stick figures to represent his three friends. Puzzle piece 8 - An outline of a new house, 10 stick figures to represent new family, a stick figure to represent Job, more outlines of animals. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child or small group of children a puzzle piece to trace over with markers. Before telling the story, spread out on the floor or on another flat surface. As you tell the story have the children decide which puzzle piece goes with the particular section you are talking about and add it to the entire puzzle. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE REVIEW (A visual & kinesthetic activity) Materials needed: Jar of marbles or jelly beans used in getting their attention activity Plastic spoons A second baby food jar A felt Jesus or cut- out of Jesus Tape WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Tape the felt or cut-out Jesus to the back of the second baby food jar. Place this jar at one end of the room and the jar with the marbles or jelly beans in it at the opposite end of the room. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Give each child a plastic spoon. Place them in a vertical line halfway between the two jars facing the jar with the marbles in it. Each child takes a turn going to the marble jar and saying his memory verse. He then takes a marble out with his spoon and walks with it back to the jar with the Jesus figure on it at the opposite end of the room and drops it in. Continue doing this activity until all the marbles or jelly beans in the "troubles" jar are transferred over into the "Jesus" jar. At the end of the activity ask the children the following questions: 1. Did we get rid of the troubles? (No, there still here. They're just in another place.) 2. When Jesus says, He'll be with us in troubles, what does He mean? (He won't necessarily get rid of the troubles, but He will be with us so we don't have to face them alone.) ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - TROUBLE SONG (An auditory activity) Materials needed: Poster board Music for tune of Jesus Loves Me WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Obtain the music or make a tape with the tune of Jesus Loves Me on it. Practice singing these alternate words with it. Make up a song-card with the verse on it, so the children can follow the letters for spelling trouble and Jesus. Sing the regular, Yes, Jesus loves me chorus. T-R-O-U-B-L-E trouble you can't bother me J-E-S-U-S my friend will be with me til the end WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children learn this special verse to one of their favorite songs. Encourage them to sing it whenever they're in trouble or feel trouble coming.
