****************************************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, June 19, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: May 1, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, WHEN EVERYONE HELPED ****************************************************************************** Lesson Aim: We should help each other as we work for Jesus. Memory Verse: We are God's fellow workers." 1 Corinthians 3:9, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - WORKING TOGETHER (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: There are no additional supplies necessary except for what is called for in the following jobs. WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Plan several jobs for pairs of children to do. Put out the necessary supplies that the jobs call for. Some ideas for jobs are: 1. Have the chairs in disarray. (One job will be to fix them in their customary position.) 2. Have felts pulled out. (One job will be to arrange them neatly back in their bags or boxes.) 3. Have craft supplies ready. (One job will be to place the craft supplies around the tables.) 4. Have Sabbath school papers handy. (One job will be to fold the Sabbath school papers and get them ready for passing out.) 5. Have a watering can prepared. (One job can be to water any plants in Sabbath school) 6. Have Bibles handy. (One job will be to pass out extra Bibles that are needed.) WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Group the children in pairs. Assign each pair a job to work together to do to help prepare for Sabbath school. (Use your creativity and unique situation to come up with your own job ideas.) When the children have finished their jobs, talk about how much easier it was to work together. Whether we're in the home or at school or at church, there are plenty of jobs for each one to do to make things go smoother. In our Bible story today a large job is finished quickly and done well because people worked together under God's direction. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - WORK THAT "COUNTS" (An auditory activity) Materials needed: Newsprint pad OR write-on/wipe-off board OR chalkboard Appropriate writing medium for above board of your choice WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Count up how many times the word work or worker is mentioned in the story. Write down that number at the beginning of the story. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Place the newsprint pad or whatever you've chosen to write on at the front of the group where all can see it. Assign one child to be the marks keeper. The rest of the group are the "reminders". While you are telling the story the children are to listen for you to say either the word, work or worker. When they hear one of these words mentioned, they are the "reminders". They make a hammering motion (one closed fist pounding on the other closed fist). Whenever the marks keeper sees them making that motion, he/she makes a mark on the writing board. At the end of the story, help them count up their marks and see how close it comes to your total figure. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE REVIEW (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Colored construction paper Scissors Glue Scotch Tape WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Trace an apron shape onto a piece of colored construction paper for each child. Cut them out. Cut five squares from another piece of colored construction paper for each child. (Make the squares small enough to fit like pockets on the front of the "work apron". Cut them out. On the piece of plain white paper, draw the following shapes. Draw them large enough to print one word of the memory verse on, but small enough for each one to fit into a pocket on the apron. (Hammer, saw, level, screwdriver, wrench) Print one word of the verse on each tool. Xerox enough copies for each child to have a sheet. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Give each child a work apron. Have them glue or tape the pockets wherever they desire on their apron. Give them the sheet of tools to cut out. (Younger children can have theirs cut out ahead of time) Discuss which work tool is the first word of the verse, which is the second etc. As they say the words of the verse, they insert the tools in the pockets. Encourage them to place the apron in a spot at home where they can be reminded that God has work for each of them to do each day. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - WORKING TOGETHER FOR JESUS (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Box of graham crackers Can of icing plastic knife Paper plate Ziploc bags WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children sit at a flat work surface such as a table. Explain that they are going to help build a wall using graham crackers and icing. The graham crackers will be the bricks, the icing will be the mortar. Each child will spread "mortar" on a "brick" and lay another "brick" on top. But before they can do their building, they have to think of a way we can work together to be God's fellow workers while we're waiting for Jesus to return. Continue laying "bricks" until all children have had at least one turn. Divide the "wall" into pieces so each child can take some home and share what they learned about working together with their family and friends.
