Memory Verse: "Let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker." Ps. 95:6 GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - LET'S PLAY FOLLOW-THE-LEADER Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Play an old-fashioned game of follow-the-leader. Select different children to be the "leader," having the other children follow him/her around in a line doing and saying the things that the leader does. In our story today God chooses a man to be the leader who will take the children of Israel away from Egypt. This man has some lessons to learn before he can become the leader, though. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY DOMINOES Materials needed: Colored 3 X 5 cards (12 per every two children in the group) Ruler Marker WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make each pair of children a set of Bible domino cards. Divide (12) 3 X 5 cards in half by measuring with the ruler and drawing a line through the center of each card. On a piece of white paper draw the following pictures or symbols. Draw them small enough to fit on half of a 3 X 5 card. A simple palace with 2 pillars and a throne, a sword or spear, a staff, a burning bush, a sandal. Xerox this sheet of paper two times for every set of domino cards you are making. Make the domino cards as follows: On half of one card write the number 12. On the other half of that card write the letter L. On half of one card write the letter L. On the other half of that card glue the palace picture. On half of one card glue another palace picture. On the other half of that card write the letter E. On half of one card write the letter E. On the other half of that card glue the picture of the sword On half of one card glue the picture of the sword. On the other half of that card write the letter A On half of one card write the letter A. On the other half of that card glue the picture of the staff. On half of one card glue the picture of the staff. On the other half of that card write the letter D. On half of one card write the letter D. On the other half of that card glue the picture of the burning bush. On half of one card glue the picture of the burning bush. On the other half of that card write the letter E. On half of one card write the letter E. On the other half of that card glue the picture of the shoe. On half of one card glue the picture of the shoe. On the other half of that card write the letter R. On half of one card write the letter R. On the other half of that card write the name, Moses. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Place the children in pairs on the floor. Give each pair a set of 12 domino cards. Assign a child in each pair the job of dividing the cards up evenly between the two of them. Each child holds their cards in their hand. As you review the points of the lesson have them take turns laying down the appropriate card always making sure the pictures or symbols match as they go. When they get to the end of the game talk about who became a great leader for God because He loved God and listened to Him for instructions. POINTS OF THE LESSON: Moses was 12 when he went to live in the palace. His mommy trained him to be a good leader while he was growing up. Moses went to live in the palace, where he was taught more about being a leader. Moses thought he was ready to be a good leader when he killed the Egyptian. God sent Moses into the wilderness to be a shepherd. He taught him more about being a good leader while he was working with the sheep. God talked to Moses from a burning bush. He told him more about what He wanted Moses to do as a leader. When Moses removed his shoes at the bush he showed God that he knew who the real leader was. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE MIME Materials needed: Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in their Bibles. Add the following mime actions to the phrases of the verse. Select volunteers to be leaders in leading the rest of the children in saying and miming the verse. "Let us bow down" - Signify by the hands an inclusion of everyone, then bow your head. "In worship" - With head still bowed, fold hands in front of you. "Let us kneel" - With head bowed and hands folded kneel down. "Before the Lord our Maker." - With head bowed, hands folded and kneeling, point heavenward. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - Materials needed: White square of felt for each child Small thin dowel stick for each child Red felt cross for each child Small blue or black open felt Bible for each child Hot glue gun/glue sticks WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Glue the white square of felt around each dowel stick so each child has a "flag". Cut out one red felt cross and one open felt Bible for each child. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Help each child make a leader's flag. This is a Christian leader's flag. We want to be leaders Jesus can use. The cross and the Bible tell others that we belong to Jesus. Everyone is making a leader's flag because everyone can be a leader for Jesus. You don't always have to be out front. People don't always have to follow you in order for you to be a good leader. Line the children up in a vertical row. March all around outside waving the flags. Tell the children to halt. Ask them what kind of a person makes a good leader. When child gives an answer such as "an unselfish person" they move to the front of the line. March around some more. Tell the children to halt. Ask for another characteristic of a good leader. (Someone who listens to you) The child who submits an answer becomes the leader of the marching line. Remind the children that all children can be leaders whether they're out in front or not. Guide them in understanding that Jesus is the best leader because He is all these things we've talked about and more.
