******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, May 29, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: May 1, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use as a supplement to help teach the lesson, A NIGHT AMONG LIONS ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: Jesus gives us a guardian angel to protect us. Memory Verse: "The angel of the Lord delivers them." Psalm 34:7, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - DARK DEN (An auditory & kinesthetic activity) Materials needed: A large appliance box OR closet OR dark blankets to make a make-shift fort Small flashlight WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary unless you need to construct a make-shift fort out of the blankets. Make sure the room is as dark as possible. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Take as many children as can comfortably fit into the appliance box, closet or fort with you. Take a small flashlight to turn on as needed to reassure them of your presence. Ask the following questions: 1. Can you see anything? Can you imagine a place darker than this? 2. How long would you like to have to sit in here? 3. When you are scared, what things can you do to help yourself feel better? In our Bible story today someone had to stay in a pitch-dark den overnight. Not only that but there were wild animals in there with him. Do you think he did any of the things we talked about to keep himself from feeling too scared? Go out of the box and GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE DRAMATIZATION (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Large pieces of plain white butcher block paper or newsprint pad paper (NOT HEAVY POSTER BOARD) Box of safety pins Several crowns Bathrobes Several spears (Use long sticks with pointed tips made from black construction paper) Poly fiber fill (sheets of cotton used to stuff pillows) Masking tape Several paper grocery sacks Gold or brown yarn Black permanent marker Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make several sets of angel wings using the butcher block or newsprint paper. (They need to be light because they will be pinned on the children's clothing) Assemble the rest of the materials into a box. Make several lion masks. Cut the grocery sacks down until they're small enough for the opening to rest on a child's shoulders and the bottom of the sack to rest on top their head when they put it over their head. Cut out two small circles for eye openings and one for a mouth opening. Mark whiskers on the sack and glue strands of yarn for a mane. Make pointed "cones" from construction paper to tape on top the stick "spears". WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give children the option of choosing to be the king, Daniel, the jealous princes, an angel a lion or a soldier. It does not matter how many children choose to be each character as long as you have at least one of each. Give the following props to the characters: King - crown Daniel - Use the fiber fill to lay on top their head and use a TINY amount of masking tape to hold a fiber fill beard on each side of their face. Princes - bathrobes Angel - Pin two paper wings on the back of each angel Lion - Masks Soldier - Spear Group the children together who are representing the same character. As you narrate the story direct the children at the right time in dramatizing the appropriate action for their character. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE SEWING CARDS (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: P. 35 in Kindergarten quarterly (each child needs one xeroxed copy) Crayons Hole puncher Hair bow yarn (Find in hair accessory section of drug stores; thick colored yarn) Masking tape Bibles Card stock paper (1/2 piece for each child) Glue sticks WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Before xeroxing the page in the quarterly underneath the title, "God saved Daniel from the lions' den," print the words, "and he'll save me from Satan, the lion." Underneath that line, print the memory verse. Xerox one of these pictures for each child. Glue the picture onto the half sheet of card stock to make it sturdier. With the hole puncher, punch five evenly spaced holes on the left and right hand side of the picture. Punch 5-6 holes across the bottom of the picture. Wrap a piece of tape around the end of each hair bow yarn to make them easier to thread through the holes. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Also read the text, I Peter 5:8 to the children. Explain to the children that they may never be thrown into a lion's den, but the Bible says Satan is like a lion prowling about seeing who he can trap in sins. Give each child a lion card and a hair yarn. Read the words on the card to them. Have them color the lion. Beginning at the left-hand side of the card, have them sew the yarn in and out of the holes going down the side, around the bottom and up the right-hand side. Tie a knot or bow at the end. Say the memory verse together several times to commit it to memory. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - CIRCLE SONG Materials needed: Music to Row, Row Row Your Boat Alternate words (found below) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children form a circle and hold hands. As they walk around in a circle going clockwise or counterclockwise sing the following words to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat. Pray, pray each day Morning, noon and night When we talk to our friend, Jesus Everything's all right At the end of the song they can fall down (like in Ring Around the Rosie) if desired.
