********************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, May 20, 2,000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: April 15, 2,000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, JESUS' PRAYER FOR HELP ******************************************************** Lesson Aim: We can pray for God's help. Memory Verse: "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation." Matt. 26:41, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - TEAMWORK Materials needed: Ropes or cords (2 pieces long enough to tie hands and feet together) Ball (At least the size of a basketball) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Put the children in pairs. (If you have an odd number of children one child can go more than once or you can be a child's partner.) Have one pair of children stand side-by-side but each facing the opposite direction. Tie the arms that are touching side-by-side together at the wrist with one of the cords. Tie the legs together that are touching at the ankles with the other cord. Explain to them that those arms and legs are dead, they cannot function. Place the ball in the center of the room. You, go to a corner of the room. The children are to work together in figuring out a way to get the ball to you without using the dead arms and legs. Don't give each pair of children longer than 2 minutes to work on it, so that everyone can have a turn. Sit down and discuss the following questions: 1. What other things can you think of that you need to do or want to do that are too hard by yourself? 2. Who are some people that you ask for help from? In our Bible story today Jesus needs help. He is getting ready for something that is very hard for Him. Who does He ask for help from? GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY PUZZLE Materials needed: P. 28 & 31 in Kindergarten quarterly Colored foam OR heavy card stock paper (one sheet for each child) Scissors Glue Markers WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Xerox p. 28 and p. 31 in the Kindergarten quarterly for each child in the class. (If you do not have access to these pictures, they are Jesus praying, The disciples sleeping, Judas kissing Jesus and a Roman soldier arresting Jesus.) Cut the pictures apart and arrange them on the foam or construction paper in the order in which they occur in the story. Cut the foam or construction paper into inter-locking pieces (four of them). WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child the four puzzle pieces, the four pictures, some markers and a glue. Have them put the puzzle pieces together then arrange the pictures so the story occurs in order. They color the pictures, then glue them onto the puzzle pieces. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE BRIDGE Materials needed: Bibles 11 pieces of white paper Markers Scissors 10 pieces of dark colored construction paper WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut the 11 pieces of white paper into large circles or rock-shapes. Print one word of the memory verse on each shape. Cut the 10 pieces of dark colored construction paper into the shape of open-mouth crocodiles. (Use a pair of large scissors opened as a pattern if needed.) WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Explain to the children that the crocodiles represent temptations Satan puts in our way every day. As they give you ideas on what some of those temptations are give them the crocodiles to place on the floor. Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Read it and talk about it together. Place a child on one side of the crocodiles. Explain that they need to get to the other side and they have to go through the crocodiles, they can't go around them. Give them the stones to hold. As they repeat the verse show them which stones to lay down in order so they can form a bridge to cross over safely to the other side. As they lay each stone down, they step on it and work their way over to the other side. Play as many times as necessary to commit the verse to memory. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - INTERCESSORY PRAYER CIRCLE Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children form a circle holding hands. Remind them of how much Jesus needed His friends to pray for Him when He was in the Garden. We call that kind of praying intercessory prayer. We need to learn to pray for each other daily beginning when we are very young. Beginning with yourself, ask the child to your left and to your right what they want you to prayfor about them. Then the child to your right asks you (because you're on their left) and the child to their right. This continues around the circle until it is back to you. Encourage the children to remember what each child on either side of them said. If a child cannot think of anything they want prayed for, encourage them to respond with, "please pray for me." You begin by only praying for the child to the left of you and the child to the right. Mention their names specifically and what they have asked for. Do not add other petitions or lengthen the prayer at this time. This prayer is for teaching children specifically about praying for others. When you are finished squeeze the hand of the child to your right. They then pray the same way. Do not force any child to pray. Encourage them to speak the name of the children on either side of them, but even that must be up to them. Close the prayer committing all prayers into God's hands.
