Memory Verse: "In all things God works for the good of those who love him." Rom. 8:28, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - ERASE-A-LOT Materials needed: Write-on/wipe-off board Dry erase markers/eraser WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Write the following letters all over the write-on/wipe-off board. (5) A's (5) T's (1) F (5) U's (1) O (5) D's (1) R (5) H's (1) G (1) I (5) L's (1) V (1) E WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Call for a volunteer to erase all the A's. Call for another volunteer to erase all the T's. Keep calling for volunteers to erase letters until the only letters left are F O R G I V E. Show the children that if you put the letters together they make the word, forgive. In our Bible story today there is lots of forgiveness. Forgiveness is a lot like erasing. It's like getting rid of mistakes and starting over. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - SILVER CUP SECRETS Materials needed: Pictures of the following: (Three are available in the Kindergarten Teacher's Quarterly pp. 36-39) camel, prison window, sacks of grain, chariot 5 oz. Disposable kitchen cups (one for each child) Silver paint Foam brushes (1 for each child) Paper towels Aprons or large men's shirts WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Xerox each picture so it is small enough to fit into one of the cups. On the camel print the words, "In all things". On the prison window print the words, "God works for the good". On the sacks of grain print the words, "of those". On the chariot print the words, "who love him". Xerox the pictures so each child has all four. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Give each child a disposable cup, a foam brush and a paper towel. Put an apron or large men's shirt on each child to cover their Sabbath clothes. Have them lay the cup upside down on the paper towel and paint the entire outside with the silver paint. Write their name on the paper towel. Set the silver cups aside to dry until the end of Sabbath school. Give each child their four pictures. Have the children lay them in order in front of themselves. First comes the camel. Joseph was taken away to Egypt. (Things don't look good for Joseph) Second comes the prison window. Joseph was put in prison for awhile even though he didn't do anything bad. (Things don't look good for Joseph) Third comes the sacks of grain. Joseph is in charge of giving out the food during the famine. (Things are looking up for Joseph) Fourth comes the chariot. Joseph is reunited with his family. (Things are looking great for Joseph) Show the children how to lay the pictures down in order saying the verse words out loud that are on each picture. When the cups dry, put the pictures inside. Encourage the children to take their cups home and share the story and memory verse using the pictures and the cup as a reminder. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - FLOWERS OF FORGIVENESS Materials needed: A rose (complete with some thorns) Very small earthenware flower pots (one for each child) Small pieces of styrofoam to stick in the flower pots (one for each child) 3-4 small silk roses for each child Several piece of greenery for each child WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children the rose with the thorns on the stem. What part do they notice first? The flower or the thorns? When we are always looking for the mistakes and the mean things people do to us it's like looking at the thorns and missing the pretty bloom. Thorns are ugly and painful. Some things people do to us are ugly and painful. When we ask Jesus to put his forgiveness in our hearts He helps us to see the good things and not concentrate on everything other people do to us. Give each child a pot, styrofoam, flowers and greenery. Help them arrange a pretty bouquet that will remind them each time they see it of forgiveness. If they want, they can choose to remove flowers from the pot from time to time to share with people they need to forgive. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - SORRY RHYME Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Teach the children the following poem or rhyme. Say the following sentences and have them repeat the poem back to you. POEM/RHYME When I've done a naughty thing to cover up won't do Just say these words, "I'm sorry" And I'll make it up to you 1. When you start a fight with your brother or sister what can you remember? (Have them repeat the poem) 2. When you broke something you weren't suppose to be playing with what can you remember? 3. When you forget to tell your mother someone important called on the phone what can you remember? 4. When you lose your best friend's favorite car what can you remember? 5. When you've been caught taking something that doesn't belong to you? Make sure the children understand the importance of making it up to a person when they've wronged them. That could mean replacing something. It could mean an extra hug or turn at something.
