Matt. 25:40, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - GROUP CLASSIFICATION Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children stand. Have them group themselves according to the following classifications. In-between each sentence have them return to their seats and remain standing until the next statement. 1. Everyone who has red or blue on today stand here on my right side. Everyone who has green or yellow on today stand here on my left side. 2. Everyone who ate breakfast this morning stand here on my right side. Everyone who skipped breakfast this morning stand here on my left side. 3. Everyone who has straight hair stand here on my right side. Everyone who has curly hair stand here on my left side. 4. Everyone who rode to church in a car stand here on my right side. Everyone who rode to church in a van or walked stand here on my left side. 5. Everyone who knows the first word of the memory verse today stand here on my right side. Everyone who has forgotten the first word stand here on my left side. How many groups did we usually end up with each time? Two. In our Bible story today Jesus talks about people being divided into two groups. One group loves Jesus and shows that love by the way they treat others. The other group say they love Jesus with their mouths but the way they treat others shows something different. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE PUZZLES Materials needed: Blank puzzles (Available at places like Wal-Mart) (One for each child) Glue sticks Markers Bibles Razor blade Ziplock bags WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Reduce the picture on p. 24 in the quarterly until the whole thing will fit onto one of the blank puzzles. Xerox it so each child will have a copy. Glue the picture page to the blank puzzle. Using the razor blade cut in-between each puzzle piece so they can be separated. Put the puzzle back together and flip it over to the blank side. Write the memory verse across this side of the puzzle. Break the puzzle apart and place the pieces in a Ziplock bag. Do this for each child in the class. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a Ziplock bag containing the puzzle pieces. Show them where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Give them time to assemble their puzzle. Review the memory verse side together several times. Talk about the pictures and have the children color them with markers. Talk about how the kindnesses the children are showing others tells about their love for Jesus. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - HAPPY HELPING OTHERS Materials needed: Smile face stickers (Preferably a medium to large ize) 8 « X 11 piece of card stock (heavier than regular or construction paper) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Draw a circle on the piece of card stock. Draw a frown face in the inside of the circle. The size of the circle depends on the size of the smile face stickers you have and the number of children doing the activity. (The end-product will be the circle being covered with smile-face stickers) Above the circle write the word, "I'm". Under the circle write the words "helping others". WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children the card stock with the frown face circle on it. Give them each a sheet of 5-6 smile face stickers. Explain that our circle buddy is not happy today. He needs your help in thinking of helpful kind things to do for others. Each time a child thinks of something kind or helpful to do for someone else, they can put one of their smile face stickers on the frowning circle. The object is to completely cover the frowning face with happy faces. Then the saying really will be true, "I'm happy helping others." ACTING ON SCRIPTURE -JESUS SAYS GAME Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: This game is similar to Simon says. Have the children stand in a horizontal line several feet from each other. They are to listen for the words, "Jesus says". If they hear them in front of a command, they squat down. If they do not hear the words, " Jesus says", they stand upright. Keep the commands coming fairly rapidly. Think up more of your own if you have more time. 1. Jesus says to visit people who are sick or lonely. 2. Jesus says to help someone when they are hurt. 3. Try to be first in line. 4. Borrow someone's toy and never give it back. 5. Jesus says to help someone younger than you who's trying to learn to do something new. 6. Laugh at your brother or sister's mistakes. 7. Jesus says to share your food with someone who doesn't have any. 8. Jesus says to . . .
