Memory Verse: "Keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour." Matt. 25:13 GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - WEDDING LIGHTS Materials needed: Small-size baby food jars (one for each child) Colored sand Votive candles (one for each child) Matches (optional) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Wash the labels off the baby food jars. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: In our story today Jesus talks about a wedding. Because the wedding was at night guests who came brought their own lamps or lights. Help the children make a wedding light of their own. Have them choose a color of sand and pour it into their jar until it is half full. Give them each a candle to twist and turn into the sand until it fits snugly into the sand. (Whether or not you choose to light the candles is optional) GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY OBJECT LESSON Materials needed: 5 birthday trick candles (the kind that come back on after you blow them out) 5 regular birthday candles Matches Baking pan Sand Small box Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut a door and one or two windows into the box to represent the bridegroom's house. Place enough sand in the baking pan so that the candles can be inserted and remain erect. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: As you tell the story let the children help assemble the scene together. Add the bridegroom's house to the sand. Add the ten candles a little distance from the sand representing the virgins. Keep the five regular candles (representing the foolish virgins) in a grouping and the five trick candles (representing the wise virgins) in a grouping. Light the candles and comment on how all the virgins are waiting for the bridegroom. Have a volunteer blow out the regular candles when the foolish virgins lamps go out. Have another volunteer blow out the trick candles. Comment on how the wise virgins brought extra oil. (The candles will re-light themselves). Finish the story. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE CANDLES Materials needed: Construction paper (one for each child) 8 « X 11 sheets of paper (one for each child) Scissors Yellow felt Permanent marker Bibles Glue or glue sticks WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Draw a tall taper candle on a piece of construction paper for each child. It should measure approximately, 1" x 9". On the candle write the memory verse starting at the top and working down vertically to the bottom. Cut out a flame for each child from the yellow felt. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Give them each a candle to cut out. (You may need to cut out younger children's candles.) Have each child glue their candle to a piece of 8 « X 11 sheet of paper. Give each child a yellow flame. Before they can add the flame to their candle, they repeat the memory verse. Play a game and see how many candles can be lit at once. Before the children leave the flame may be glued on so it won't get lost. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - Materials needed: Long Taper candle Cassette player or piano player Music to This Little Light of Mine WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Record the music to This Little Light of Mine several times onto a cassette tape if you do not have a piano player. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children sit in a circle. When the music plays, they pass the candle around. When the music stops whoever is holding the candle says, "Jesus is coming soon, and I'm going to get ready to meet Him by.................", then they complete the sentence in their own words. The music resumes playing and whoever is holding the candle when it stops takes the next turn.
