******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, April 17, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: March 15, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, THE BOY KING WHO LOVED GOD ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: God's Word is our guide. Memory Verse: "If you love me, you will obey what I command." John 14:15, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - HIDDEN TREASURE (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Small felt Bibles (Like used in Beginners Dept.) OR small New Testaments WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Hide as many Bibles around the room as there will be children participating in this activity at one time. Hide them under things, inside things etc. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Tell the children that there is treasure hidden in the room. Ask them, if they were to lose something where are some places where they would look for it? (Under things, inside things, behind things etc.) If they look under, inside and behind, they will be able to find something very valuable. You cannot tell them what the treasure is, but when they think they have found the treasure, they may return to their seat with it. When all the children have returned to their seats, talk about the various treasures they have chosen to bring back. God's words to us are a very valuable treasure. Where do we find God's words and ideas? In the Bible. (If no children brought back Bibles, send them briefly looking again for the Bibles.) In our Bible story today God's words and ideas were written on paper and rolled up into something called a scroll. Wicked kings did not care about the scrolls and had allowed them to become lost down through time. If the children listen carefully, they will hear about this treasure that is found in the temple one day. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - SCROLL STORY (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Dowel sticks (2 for each child) Tape Rubber bands (1 for each child) 3 sheets of plain white paper per child (continuous feed such as computer paper is best) Glue sticks Bible Story Book vol. 5 WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Xerox the pictures found on pp. 171,172 and 175. Xerox one copy for each child. Cut the dowel sticks into approximately 12" lengths WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: 1. Place the children at a flat work surface and give them their three sheets of plain white paper and copies of the Bible story pictures. As you tell the story have them pick out the picture that matches what they are hearing and glue it to one of the sheets of white paper. (If you're not using continuous feed paper, tape the three sheets of paper together in order with tape on both the front and back.) 2. Tape the left-hand side of the length of paper to one of the dowel sticks and the right-hand side to the other dowel stick. 3. Roll the left-hand stick up until you come to the first picture the child has glued. While you hold the left-hand side of the stick still have the child roll the right-hand stick up to meet you. Have the child attach a rubber band to hold the "scroll" together. Don't make the rubber band too tight so that it crinkles the "scroll". 4. When all the children have a story scroll made, have them practice taking the rubber band off and unrolling it correctly so that they can tell the story by telling what each picture is about. Encourage them to share the story with a family member or friend this week. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE REVIEW (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: A story scroll (Follow directions above) Cassette Tape and recorder or pianist WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make a story scroll if you did not already do so in the previous activity. Obtain music to the song, "If You're Happy and You Know It". Have a pianist play for you or pre-record the song twice on a cassette tape. Practice using the alternate memory verse words in place of the original words of the song. (If You're H--a-p-p-y And You Know It Clap Your Hands) If You Love Me You'll Obey What I Command If You Love Me You'll Obey What I Command If You Love Me You'll Obey If You Love Me You'll Obey If You Love Me You'll Obey What I Command WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Sit the children in a circle. Show them where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Practice singing it with the alternate tune several times. Begin circulating the scroll around the circle. Play the music. When the music stops whoever is holding the scroll repeats the memory verse. (They don't have to sing it.) Repeat the activity. As soon as a child holding the scroll can repeat the verse, write their name on the outside of the scroll, and they step outside of the circle to give others a chance. The goal is for everyone to have their name written on the scroll by the end of the game. If a child cannot repeat the verse, they can remain in the game and wait for another turn. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - BAKE SALE FOR BIBLES This is a very different more long-term acting on scripture activity. When we teach the Kindergartner that God's Word, the Bible, is for them too, are we prepared to follow through on that concept? How many Kindergartners in your Sabbath School class actually own their own Bible? Are they pretty Bibles with lots of colorful pictures? Would a Kindergarten child be attracted to it enough to look through it? Think of a project that you are willing to allow your Kindergarten class to help with. Place your needs before the rest of your congregation. For example, ask the congregation to donate baked goods for a sale. Set-up the bake sale in a prominent area with high visibility. Schedule 2-3 Kindergarten children to sit with you and help sell the baked goods for 30 minutes at a time. Hang a sign that says, "Baked goods Bring Bibles." Explain to your customers that you are raising money to supply children with Bibles. With the money raised purchase large print colorful Bibles for each child in the class. Write a special message inside each one. Help the children realize how special the Bible is because they raised money for it themselves. Stress how important it is to take very good care of it and bring it with them to Sabbath school each week.
