********************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, April 15, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: March 15, 2000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, JESUS IS COMING AGAIN *********************************************************** Lesson Aim: Jesus gave us signs so we can know and rejoice that His coming is near. Memory Verse: "This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world, and then the end will come." Matt. 24:14, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION -FOLLOWING CLUES Materials needed: Picture of the season of spring Picture of an airport Picture of a dog Picture of a child celebrating a birthday Sheet of pretty stationary with an envelope WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Tack the four pictures in different areas of the room. On the stationary write the following message: Dear ___________, This letter is from grandma. I love you very much. I miss you very much. I wish I did not live so far away. I am coming to see you soon, though. I cannot tell you exact details, but there are some clues hidden around the room that will give you an idea about my coming. Look for four special pictures. Study each picture carefully. One picture will tell you what time of year I am coming. One will tell you how I will get there. One will tell you who I am bringing with me and one will tell you why I am coming. Please be ready to spend time with me when I get there. Love, grandma. Place the letter in the envelope, seal it and write each Kindergarten child's name on the front of the envelope. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Read the letter to the children. Insert each of their names where the blank is. Instruct them to circulate around the room looking for the four special pictures. When they think they have found one, they need to think about grandma's letter and see if they can figure out anything about her coming from the picture. They don't share any of the information until they all return to their seats. Re-read grandma's letter. See how many questions can be answered after looking at the pictures. (She's coming in the spring, on an airplane. She's coming to celebrate the child's birthday with him/her and she's bringing her dog with her.) Even with grandma's clues there are a lot of things we don't know. We don't know exactly what day or what time she will arrive in Spring. We don't know which airplane or what airport she will come into. We don't know how she plans on celebrating the birthday with the child. But the clues help us to feel excited about the event. Jesus has given us a letter to tell us about His soon coming to our earth. (Hold the Bible up.) The Bible gives us clues about Jesus' coming that help us get excited about this event. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE SONG Materials needed: Cassette player or piano player Music to the tune of Battle Hymn of the Republic WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) If you do not have a piano player, pre-record the music to Battle Hymn of the Republic several times onto a tape. Only record the verse not the chorus. Practice singing it ahead of time, so you know how all the words fit in. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Explain what it means. The gospel is the good news. The good news about Jesus and His world and what it is like will be told to everyone, and then He will return. Have the children stand in a circle and hold hands. Practice singing the memory verse twice. Then circle around to the right on the first phrase, "This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world." Immediately change directions and circle around to the left when that same phrase is repeated. Once again immediately change directions and circle around to the right again when the phrase is repeated. On the phrase, "and then the end will come." have the children hold their hands up high still clasped together and draw their bodies inward together. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - GOSPEL PROCLAMATION Materials needed: Yellow or gold card stock (one sheet for each child) Scissors Markers Gold glitter Glue WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Draw a simple trumpet on each sheet of card stock or draw one and xerox it onto the card stock. Keep it simple like the ones pictured on p. 13 in the quarterly being blown by the angels. On each trumpet write the words of the memory verse in pencil. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Explain to the children that trumpets are often used when an announcement is about to be made. They are used in music to make a certain part of the piece stand out. We'll write our memory verse on one today to help us remember to announce the good news of Jesus' return whenever we have the opportunity. Give each child a trumpet to cut out. Then have them trace over the memory verse words with markers and sprinkle glitter around the outer edges for trim. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - ARTIST'S CORNER Materials needed: Artist's drawing paper Smocks or old shirts for cover-up Pastel chalks WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Break the chalk into smaller pieces. Have each child listen to the description of the second coming again. Ask them to imagine what it will look like and draw a picture of it on their paper. Then show them how to lightly rub the chalk on the paper and wipe with a tissue to blend the colors together. Chalk is for shading not coloring. Give each child a small picture of Jesus to glue in the center of their second coming cloud. (Xerox the one on p. 13 of the quarterly.) While working talk about how it will feel to see Jesus really coming. Hang the pictures in the room for display.
