********************************************************** Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, March 25, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: January 31, 2000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, A SPECIAL GIFT FOR JESUS *********************************************************** Lesson Aim: We show our love for Jesus by giving Him our best. Memory Verse: "We love because he first loved us." 1 John 4:19, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - SNIFF TEST Materials needed: (5) Small boxes (jewelry-type) Hammer Nail Cotton ball with perfume sprayed on it Whole cloves Slices or wedges of lemon Chocolate candy bar 2-3 moth balls WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) In the lids of the five boxes punch 5-6 small holes with the hammer and nail. In one box place the cotton ball with perfume. In another box place the whole cloves. In a third box place the lemon wedges on a plastic bag. In the fourth box place an opened chocolate candy bar. In the fifth box place 2-3 moth balls. Set the boxes at the front of the class. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: In our Bible story today someone gave a special love gift to Jesus. An item like that gift is in one of these boxes. Let's do a sniff test and discover what it was. Have the children take turns sniffing the first box then volunteering guesses as to what is inside. Repeat this procedure for all the boxes. After the children make a guess as to which item is talked about in the Bible story remove all the lids and give them an opportunity to see what each box contained. This gift was not just any old thing the lady in the story could find. The perfume she gave Jesus was the best and showed how much she loved Jesus. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY TRAIN Materials needed: 6 sheets of plain white paper Scissors Pencils Crayons WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut one piece of paper into the shape of a train engine. Cut four sheets of paper into the shape of box cars and one sheet of paper into the shape of a caboose. (For larger classes make more box cars.) Leave tongues on the paper cars so they can be hitched (taped) together. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a piece of train. Assign them the following pictures to draw on their train. 1. Draw a picture of Simon's house 2. Draw a picture of Mary, Martha and Lazarus. 3. Draw a picture of a table with food on it. 4. Draw a bottle of perfume. 5. Draw a lady with long hair wiping Jesus' feet. 6. Draw Judas and Simon with grumbling faces. (If you're making a longer story train, look for other important facts from the lesson to illustrate.) After the children are finished their train piece, tape them together at the tongues and display the train where all can see as you go through the story. Point to each picture as a reference point. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - FIRST PLACE LOVE Materials needed: Blue construction paper Scissors Elmer's glue Glitter Markers Straight pins Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Make a first place blue ribbon for each child. Across the top of the ribbon print the words, We love because he. Vertically, down the length of the ribbon write the word, FIRST in large capital lettering. Across the bottom print the words, loved us. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. When it comes to first place, Jesus gets the winner's blue ribbon for love. He loved us first. That's good news! Help the children make a first place ribbon to wear. 1. Trace over all the words except FIRST with markers. 2. Trace over the word, FIRST with Elmer's glue, then sprinkle with glitter. 3. When the ribbon is dry, pin it on and wear it proudly. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Ask the children if they know what leftovers are. The remains of what has already been picked over. What's left after everyone has taken what they want. Would they rather have fresh pick or leftovers? Mary knew she wanted to give Jesus her best, not just leftovers. Are the children in the following scenarios giving their best or leftovers? If you think they are giving their best point your thumb upwards. If you think Jesus is getting leftovers, point your thumb downwards. 1. The only time Sue prays to Jesus is before she drops in bed at night. (Leftovers) 2. At night time Sam reads his Bible story with his parents before he chooses another book off his shelf. (Fresh pick) 3. John only goes to church if there's nothing else going on he'd rather do. (Leftovers) 4. Whenever Sarah is given any money she always sets some aside to put in an offering at Sabbath school or church. 5. Charlene never wants to miss her favorite TV program even if it means having to skip worship. (Leftovers)
