******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, March 6, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: January 31, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, KINDNESS REPAID ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: When we love Jesus we will look for ways to be kind. Memory Verse: "Dear children, let us love with actions and in truth." I John 3:18, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - BUBBLING KINDNESS (A visual & auditory activity) Materials needed: Bottle of bubbles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Bring out the bottle of bubbles. (Blow one single bubble.) Say, "When Susie woke up she noticed her mother was still in bed. She played extra quietly so mother could sleep some more." (Blow another bubble.) Say, "When mother woke up she felt so good she fixed Susie an extra nice breakfast." (Blow another bubble.) Say, "When Susie was done eating she cleaned up the dishes for mother." Kindnesses are like bubbles, they just keep coming. When you do a kind thing, someone else does something kind because of what you did. Then someone else does and so on and so on. Ask the children to help you continue thinking of kind things Susie and her mother might do throughout the day. For each thing they mention blow a bubble or let them blow a bubble. At the end of the activity blow many bubbles at once. Say, "This is how many kindnesses Jesus wants us to do each day for one another." In our Bible story today kindness seems to be everywhere. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - DRAMATIZATION (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Measuring cup Water Baby food jars OR canning jars (Enough for each child to fill 2-3) Play money Sleeping bag Pillow Small bedside lamp Table Chair WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Place the jars in one area of the room. (Have towels handy for spills). Keep the water, measuring cup and money with you. Place the remaining materials from the list in another area of the room, but do not set them up. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: As you narrate the story direct the children to the corner of the room with the jars. Let them pretend to be the sons in the story who go out and retrieve jars for mother. As they bring you jars help them fill them with water using the measuring cup. Explain how after filling the jars with oil the widow sold the oil and received money. Give each child some play money in exchange for their jars of water. At the beginning of the second story, lead the children to the area of the room containing the sleeping bag, pillow, lamp, table and chair. Have them help you set up a "special room" for Prophet Elisha. Have one child pretend to be the boy. After he dies he lays on the sleeping bag until Elisha comes. Conclude the stories showing the children how kindness has a way of coming back. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE -KINDNESS BOOK (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Magazines with the following pictures in them: Animals Adult women and men Babies Boys and girls of various ages Glue sticks Scissors Construction paper Hole punch Brass fasteners Pencils WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Prepare one sample sheet on 8 1/2 X 11 paper as shown and xerox enough copies so that each child in the class has 4-5. "Dear children (_________________________) Leave this space blank for a picture Let us love with actions and in truth." 1 John 3:18, NIV WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Look up the memory verse together in the Bible. Give each child a sample xeroxed sheet. Show them how they can write their own name on the line because the Bible text is meant for them too. Help them point to each word and say the verse with you. Talk about ways they can show kindness to mother or grandmother this week. Pass out the magazines. Have children find a picture to represent their mother or grandmother. It is cut out and glued in the middle of the page that has been left blank. Continue talking about various members of the family. Give each child new sheets for each person they think of who they can do a kindness for. Repeat the memory verse together each time before completing each new sheet. (Be sensitive to children with different family set-ups and living conditions.) When the children have completed as many pages as desired, make a cover for the book. Each child chooses two pieces of colored construction paper, lays the white pages between, hole punches the sides and fastens together with brass fasteners. Encourage the children to take their books home and place them where they can remember to actually do what their books show. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - KINDNESS BALL (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Large ball (one that can be written on with permanent marker) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On the ball write the words KINDNESS BOUNCES BACK. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Review the memory verse with the children. Remind them that it means, not just having feelings of kindness and love in your heart but doing kind and loving things for others. Have the children stand in a circle. Ask them what they like to do with a ball. When they answer throw it, say," Do you like someone you throw it to, to keep it or throw it back?" (Most likely they'll answer throw it back.) That's the way it is with kindness. When someone does something kind to you, it's fun to think of something kind to do back. It may be to the same person or it may be to someone else who comes along. If their answer was that they like to bounce a ball, say,"Do you like the ball to come right back up in your hands or roll away?" (Most likely they'll answer come back in my hands.) That's the way it is with kindness. Lots of times when you do something kind for someone, someone will do something kind for you. Throw the ball gently to a child in the circle. Tell him/her something kind you would like to do for someone this week. Have them throw the ball to another child in the circle and think of something kind they would like to do. Continue in this manner making sure all children who want to participate get a turn. Guide them in thinking of others besides family members to be kind to.
