********************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, March 4, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: January 31, 2000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, THE SELFISH MAN ********************************************************* Lesson Aim: We should share with those who have less than we have. Memory Verse: "Give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.........." Matt. 19:21, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - TREASURE BOX Materials needed: Box (one with a small lock and key) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Ask the children what treasure is? Something we cherish or love. (Show the children the locked box.) If they had a treasure box of any size what things would they put in the box that they cherish and love? When a child has thought of something, they come and unlock the box, tell everyone what they are sticking in (obviously for pretend) and re-lock the box. Continue until all children who wish to have had an opportunity to participate and contribute. In our story today Jesus talks to a young man who has a lot of money treasures. His treasures are so important to him that he makes a bad choice about them. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - BIBLE STORY ADD-ONS Materials needed: Three permanent markers; red, yellow, green Poster board WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Put a small colored dot in the colors indicated after the following sentences in your quarterly. 1. He made them feel loved. (Green dot) 2. And he heard the blessing that Jesus gave to the little ones. (Green dot) 3. I must know more about Jesus and what He teaches! (Green dot) 4. Oh, how much he wanted to follow Jesus. (Green dot) 5. But Jesus also knew that the man loved something else more than he loved Jesus. (Yellow dot) 6. Yet those few words showed the man the sinful spot in his heart. (Yellow dot) 7. "What else can I do?" (Green dot) 8. Sell the houses and lands that are making you rich and give the money to the poor." (Green dot) 9. Jesus knew the man really loved himself more than anything else! (Red dot) 10.He would show that the sadness and suffering of the poor touched his heart just as it touched Jesus' heart. (Green dot) 11.He could do so much good with his money. (Yellow dot) 12.He couldn't give up his riches. (Red dot) Draw a stop light and color the top light red, the middle light yellow and the bottom light green. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children the stoplight. Tell them that whenever you point to the green light they are to say altogether, Ahhhh, that's good! Whenever you point to the yellow light they are to say altogether, Ah, oh, watch out! Whenever you point to the red light they are to say, Oh no! That's too bad! As you tell the story from the quarterly, point to the appropriate light as your pre-marked quarterly indicates. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - TREASURE RELAY Materials needed: Jewels (The sequins that are cut into different shapes such as squares, ovals, circles, triangles etc.) Crown (Get one from Burger King or make one from heavy card stock paper) Glue stick Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Set the crown at the front of the room. Place the jewels in a dish at the back of the room. Put the glue stick beside the crown. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Repeat it several times together. Have the children line up in a vertical row at the back of the room. Explain the meaning of the memory verse. (Jesus wants us to spend our time thinking about what other people need. Do they need food? Do they need clothes? Do they need someone to love and encourage them? When we give these things to others we show Jesus that we are ready to enjoy the treasures He has for us in Heaven.) The child in the back of the line closest to the bowl of jewels takes one from the bowl. He says the memory verse and passes the jewel to the child in front of him. That child says the verse and passes the jewel to the one in front of him. This continues until the jewel reaches the first child who takes the jewel to the crown at the front of the room and glues it on. He then returns to the back of the line and is the first to select the next jewel for passing. The activity is complete when each child has had a turn to glue a jewel on the crown and you're back to the child who was originally first in line. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - HEAVENLY TREASURE Materials needed: Small jewelry-size boxes (one for each child)(Hallmark or other gift/card shops; jewelry stores are sources to check out. They must have removable lids) Jewels (just like the ones mentioned in the previous activity) Elmer's glue 4-5 slips of paper for each child Pencils or pens WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary other than the gathering of the supplies. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a small box. Have them decorate the top of the lid and the sides of the box with jewels. Talk with the children about what kind of treasure we can share with people that will also prepare us for Heaven? (Love, food/clothes, kind words, friendship etc. Try to keep the children focused on things they can actually give even at their age.) Print their answers on a chalkboard, write-on/wipe-off board or newsprint pad. Give them slips of paper to copy the answers on to. The slips of paper then go into their treasure box. Pray with the children and encourage them to put the box somewhere at home where they can be reminded each day about their treasures.
