Memory Verse: "Honor one another above yourselves." Rom. 12:10, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - MAKING CHOICES Materials needed: Poster board (one sheet green; one sheet red) Scissors Glue Popsicle sticks Small pieces of red and green paper (about the size of a stamp) 2 different pieces of fruit (doesn't matter what kind as long as they're different) 2 different games 2 different balls (i.e.: a football and a baseball) 2 different books Box of markers or crayons 2 different outfits 2 different videos Scotch tape WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut out a green and red posterboard disc for each child about the size of a juice cup. Glue them together with the popsicle stick stuck between. Each child now has a "sign" to hold. On one piece of fruit tape the small green piece of paper; on the other piece tape the red piece of paper. Do this to the two different games, the two different balls, books, outfits, videos and two of the markers. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a green/red "sign" to hold. Show them the two pieces of fruit. Ask them which one they would choose. They hold up their sign on the green side if they would choose the fruit with the green paper on it and the red side if they would choose the fruit with the red paper on it. Continue doing this with all the different choices. At the end of the activity say, "We make choices everyday. Some choices are easy to make some are hard. Today in our Bible story a man has to make several choices. God helps him to make wise, unselfish choices. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - CHOICES PUZZLE Materials needed: One sheet of colored foam for each child Xerox pictures on pp. 15, 17, 18, 21, 29, 32, (one for each child) Glue Scissors WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Divide each child's sheet of colored foam in half. Cut the left-half of the foam into six simple puzzle shapes. Cut the right-half of the foam into six simple puzzle shapes that correspond to the puzzle shape on the left. On the six puzzle shapes on the left-hand side glue one of the pictures you xeroxed onto each shape. On the six puzzle shapes on the right-hand side print the following sentences. I chose to listen to the snake instead of God I chose to offer fruit as a sacrifice instead of a lamb I chose to obey God and build an ark We chose to build a tall tower instead of trusting God I chose to go wherever the Lord sent me I chose to die for the sins of everyone Mix each child's puzzle pieces up and place them in a bag. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have each child spread their puzzle pieces out on the floor. Show them the first piece. (I chose to listen to the snake instead of God.) Recall to their mind this story that they have already studied this quarter. Ask them to find the picture match and connect it to this piece. Lay those two pieces aside. Go on to the next one. (I chose to offer fruit as a sacrifice instead of a lamb.) Ask them to find the picture match and connect it to this piece. Lay those two pieces aside. Continue in this manner until all six of their matches are connected. Encourage them to take the puzzle pieces home and put them together sharing with their family and friends the stories of people's different choices. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE SONG Materials needed: Piano player or cassette recorder and tape Music for the tune of If You're Happy and You Know It WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary except to practice the song. Honor one another above yourselves Honor one another above yourselves Honor one another Honor one another Honor one another above yourselves WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Line five children up in a horizontal row. Stand in front of the first child. Take their hands in yours and say or sing the first line of the memory verse. Stand in front of the second child. Repeat the procedure but say the second line of the memory verse. Continue in this manner until you've worked your way all the way down the line saying or singing each line of the above song. Take your place at the end of the line and the first child in line repeats what you just did. Continue this activity until all the children have a chance to go down the line repeating or singing the verse. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - THE BACKWARDS GAME Materials needed: 23 pieces of plain white paper Black magic marker Dice or spinner WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On 9 sheets of the paper print the following letters, one letter to a page. U N S E L F I S H Place the 23 sheets of paper around the room in a path formation, beginning in one corner and ending in another. The nine sheets with the letters printed on them should occur randomly along the path. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Explain to the children that this is called the unselfish game. The way to win is to end up back at the beginning. Each child takes a turn rolling the dice or spinning the spinner. They advance the number shown on the path. If they land on a paper with a letter, they follow these instructions. 1. U - You let someone choose which game color piece they wanted to be first. Go back 5 spaces. 2. N - You let someone choose a candy from the box before you do. Go back 3 spaces. 3. S - You let someone go ahead of you in the lunch line. Go back 1 space. 4. E - You let your brother ride in the front seat next to mom even though it is your turn. Go back 7 spaces. 5. L - You split the last piece of gum in half even though your sister hasn't asked for any. Go back 4 spaces. 6. F - You let a friend use your new markers because theirs don't work as well. Go back 2 spaces. 7. I - You play quietly with your toys so mom can take care of the baby who is sick. Go back 6 spaces. 8. S - You share some of your money with boys and girls who need to know about Jesus far away even though you've never seen them or met them. Go back 4 spaces. 9. H - When your friend needs to borrow one of your jackets you let him choose first and you wear what is left. Go back 5 spaces. For any children who have not made it back to the beginning of the game, they can think of their own ways to be unselfish and you can assign them spaces to retreat until they reach the beginning also.
