******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, February 27, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: January 31, 1999 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, ELISHA ANSWERS WHEN GOD CALLS ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: Jesus chooses faithful people to help Him. Memory Verse: "We will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air." 1 Thess. 4:17, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - FAITHFUL FRIENDS (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Bring either real pets or stuffed animals that represent pets children may have or like to have (Cat, rodent, fish, bird, horse, dog etc. - Make sure and include a dog) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) If using stuffed animals, place them in various spots around the room. Real animals will be attention-getting enough. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Have the children take turns choosing which pet they would choose if they could have any in the pet store, (Don't limit ideas to what you have supplied.) While holding the pets ask the following questions: 1. Which pet might be the most fun to listen to? (Bird) 2. Some people call this pet independent because it only plays with you and cuddles with you when it is in the mood. Which do you think that might be? (Cat) 3. Which pets are fun to hold but easy to lose? (Rodent - mouse, hamster, guinea pig etc.) 4. Which pet would be fun to ride? (Horse) 5. Which pet would be the hardest to get close to? (Fish) 6. Some people call this pet the faithful one because it sticks by you no matter what. (Dog) Some dogs are trained to be so faithful, they will not leave their master even when their master dies. Service dogs are trained to have responsibilities like opening doors and picking up things handicapped people drop. Being faithful and responsible are two things that boys and girls need to learn to be too. In our Bible story today two of God's prophets, Elijah and Elisha were both faithful and responsible. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE Materials needed: 16 pieces of white or light colored construction paper Scotch tape Crayons Pictures of the following (chariot of fire, crown, Baal idol, Bears and boys in quarterly, horse or horses, plowed field, Jesus) Small mirror WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) On eight of the pieces of construction paper write the following letters, one letter to each page: F A I T H F U L WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: 1. Give each child a paper with a letter on it. Have them trace over the letter on the front with a crayon. 2. Give each child a second blank piece of construction paper. Give each child a picture to tape onto the page according to the letter page they colored. F - Chariot of fire picture A - Crown picture I - Baal idol picture T - Boys in quarterly with bears picture H - Horse or horses picture F - Plowed field picture U - Give this child the small mirror to tape onto their page L - Jesus picture 3. Help each child scotch tape the top of their letter page to the top of the picture page. Tape on the inside and on the outside. The end result will be a letter page that lifts up to reveal a picture page. 4. Ask the following questions. Whoever has the answer lifts up their flap and shows it then stands at the front. 1. What was the chariot made of that Elijah rode to Heaven in? 2. Who was the queen of Israel now? 3. What had the Israelites begun worshiping? 4. What did the young boys in Israel do to prophet Elisha? 5. What pulled the chariot of fire that Elijah rode in? 6. Where did Elijah first find Elisha? 7. Who else besides Elijah and Elisha does God want to be faithful? (You) 8. Who will the faithful be caught up in the clouds to meet? (Lord) Have all the children close their flaps. Tell them that the letters on their front pages spell the word faithful. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - MEMORY VERSE REVIEW (A multi-sensory activity) Materials needed: Empty egg carton (1/2 doz. Size with six holes) Dried beans Plastic spoons Permanent Marker WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Cut the top off the egg carton. Cut the egg holes apart so they can stand alone. Place the six egg container holes in a horizontal row across a table or other flat surface. On six pieces of paper write the following words: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHY, BOOK OF BIBLE, CHAPTER & VERSE. Write them with a bold dark permanent marker. Tape a card in front of each egg hole in the order you see them above. Place the dried beans in a basket or bowl 6-8 feet away from the egg cartons. Place the plastic spoons beside the beans. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children the empty egg carton holes. Explain to them that the goal of the activity is to fill each hole with beans. To be able to place a bean in a hole, the children must remember which part of the memory verse answers the question on the paper in front of the hole. Example: 1. Who is the memory verse about? (We) 2. What will happen to us? (We'll be caught up together with them) 3. Where? (In the clouds) 4. Why? (To meet the Lord in the air) 5. Which book of the Bible is this verse found in? (I Thess.) 6. Which chapter and verse is this verse found in? (4:17) A child chooses which hole they want to put a bean in. If it is the hole with the "why" word in front of it, you ask them, "Why?" and they answer, "to meet the Lord in the air." They then pick up a bean with a spoon and walk to the "why" carton and drop it in. Continue taking turns saying verse portions and dropping beans in until each carton hole is filled. Every so often, stop the game, and ask each question in order so the children can repeat the verse in order. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - FAITHFUL SCENARIOS (A auditory activity) Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Remind the children about the characteristics of the pets they saw. "What is the word that we think of when we talk about dogs?" (Faithful) Read the following scenarios to the children. If they think the person in the scenario is being faithful, they can bark like a dog. If they think the person is not being faithful, they remain quiet. 1, I'm suppose to feed the cats every morning. Today, it feels too cold to go outside. I think I'll skip it this one time. (Unfaithful) 2. Mother asked me to clean my room. I did half of it, but now I am too tired to finish. I'll shove the rest of my things out of sight under my bed. (Unfaithful) 3. I told grandma I would come to the nursing home to visit her on Friday. My friends all decide to go to the park on Friday. I tell them I need to go visit my grandma instead. (Faithful) 4. My mother reads my Bible story to me every night before I go to bed. One night she has to stay out late at a meeting. Even though I can't read I look at the pictures in my Bible story book and try to remember the story on my own. (Faithful) 5. I have a friend that other kids in the neighborhood don't like. One day they plan to play a mean trick on him. I tell them I'm not going to do it with them. (Faithful)
