************************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, February 19, 2000 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date Completed: January 31, 2000 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, LAZARUS LIVES AGAIN ************************************************************** Lesson Aim: When Jesus comes again, He will resurrect those who loved Him. Memory Verse: "All who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out." John 5:28,29, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - MIRACLES OR MAGIC Materials needed: Old dirty-looking pennies (one for each child) One shiny new-looking penny Bottle of white vinegar Salt Measuring spoon Small dish Paper towel WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Mix 6 Tbsp. Vinegar with 2 Tbsp. Of salt in the small dish. Stir until it is dissolved. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a dirty penny. Show them a brand-new shiny penny. Do you believe we can make your pennies look pretty like this one without any scrubbing or rubbing? Have the children all drop their pennies into the dish. While they are soaking in the vinegar solution discuss the following: "Was Jesus a miracle maker or a magic man? What is the difference between miracles and magic? (Magic is used to entertain people; It's a show based on tricks and deceptions. Miracles are things that happen for good that cannot be explained by people.) Check the pennies. This looks like magic. Actually it can be explained scientifically. The liquid in the dish contains vinegar and salt which is what cleaned the pennies. This is not a miracle, it can be explained. Jesus did not do magic. He did miracles which could not be explained. The things he did like healing the sick, giving sight to the blind and casting out devils were done for the good of people. No one could explain how He did them, and no one else could work the miracles He did. He did them because He loved people and wanted to help them. He wanted to make their lives new like these shiny pennies. The miracle in our story today is one of the most amazing ones He did while He lived on this earth. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - EDIBLE BIBLE STORY Materials needed: 8 stick pretzels for each child String cheese (Enough for each child to loosely wrap around one pretzel stick) 1 Ritz or other round cracker for each child 4 Saltine or Club crackers for each child 1 napkin for each child 1 Zip-lock bag for each child WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Put each child's materials in the Zip-lock bag. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Guide the children in assembling the story using their food articles in the following way: 1. Use the pretzel sticks as people and lay them on the napkin as the story unfolds. 2. Build a tomb with the Saltine or Club crackers. Place the Ritz at the front of the tomb, so it can be rolled away. 3. Wrap a pretzel with string cheese and "lay it inside the tomb". 4. Re-arrange and move the food pieces as the story progresses. Use your own discretion as to whether you will eat the snacks after the story or send them home in the Zip-lock bag. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - HAND AND BODY MOTIONS MEMORY VERSE Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Think of some hand or body motions to go with words or phrases from the memory verse. Following are some suggestions: All - Start with hands together, palms facing each other in front of you at chest level. Separate palms and open arms wide until they extend from side to side to signify the word, "all". Who - Close your fingers to your thumb on both hands making "O's" and place the "O's" in front of your eyes representing and owl. Are in Their Graves - Fold hands across chest and close eyes resembling a dead person in a casket. Will Hear - Place your left hand cupped behind your left ear and your right hand cupped behind your right ear. His Voice - Place palm to throat and lightly grasp. And Come Out - Repeat the dead person motion from above but this time make a decided motion of unfolding hands, opening eyes and tilting forward slightly. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Show the children where the memory verse is found in the Bible. Repeat it several times together. Add the hand and body motions and repeat it again several times together. Call for volunteers to direct it from the front. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - ORDER THE PICTURES BOOKLET Materials needed: One sheet of plain white paper Scissors Colors Stapler Construction paper (optional for making a front and back cover for the booklet) WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Fold the sheet of plain white paper in half and then in half again. In each of the four sections draw or paste uncolored pictures that depict the following: 1. A casket being taken to a graveyard or a funeral service of some sort 2. People placing flowers by a grave 3. Jesus return at the Second Coming 4. People standing beside opened graves Xerox the page so each child in your class has one. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a xeroxed picture. Have them cut the pictures apart. While they are coloring them talk about what order they occur. When they're done coloring they staple them together in that order and add a construction paper cover if desired. Encourage them to share the booklet with their friends and family.
