******************************************************* Title: Kindergarten Sabbath School Program, January 23, 1999 From: NAD Children's Ministries (author: Lisa Seeders) Date: December 15, 1998 Abstract: Activities to use in place of program helps to teach the lesson, A NAUGHTY SON ******************************************************* Lesson Aim: Jesus wants me to love and obey my parents Memory Verse: "Honor your father and your mother....." Exo. 20:12, NIV GETTING THEIR ATTENTION - BALLOON BAT (A visual, kinesthetic & auditory activity) Materials needed: 1 large balloon WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Stand the children in a circle. Ask them what will happen if you bat the balloon up into the air. (It will come back down, unless it is filled with helium.) Bat the balloon and call on someone to catch it. Hold the balloon and ask the children, "Sometimes things automatically happen because of something we do. These things that happen are called consequences. Can you say that big word with me? Sometimes consequences are good, sometimes they are bad. What will automatically happen if I touch a hot burner on the stove? (I will get burned, won't I) Is that a good consequence or a bad one? What will happen if I go to sleep on time and get a good night's rest? (I will feel good the next morning) Is that a good consequence or a bad one?" Explain to the children that you are going to think of actions and you want them to think of the consequences or what might happen. You will bat the balloon up into the air and whoever's name you call must say what might happen and catch the balloon before it hits the ground. Other children in the circle can help by calling out answers. 1. What might happen if you leave gum lying around somewhere? 2. What might happen if you leave a toy on the stairs 3. What might happen if you carry too many glasses to the sink at once? 4. What might happen if you brush your teeth faithfully every day? 5. What might happen if you let go of your mother's hand in a crowded shopping center or mall? 6. What might happen if you leave one of daddy's tools outside for several days? 7. What might happen if you play with a lighter in your bedroom? 8. What might happen if you are good and cooperative in the store while shopping with mommy? In our story today King David found out what happens when you don't teach your children to love and obey you. He experiences a bad consequence with one of his sons. GO STRAIGHT INTO THE BIBLE STORY. GETTING INTO SCRIPTURE - SAND SCENE (a visual, kinesthetic and auditory activity) Materials needed: Shoe Box Play sand Popsicle sticks Construction paper Glue sticks Scissors Aluminum foil WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) Line the shoe box with aluminum foil. Pour sand into the box until it is approximately 1" from the top. Lay the construction paper, popsicle sticks, scissors and glue sticks out on a flat work surface. WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: The children will each make a popsickle stick puppet to use in the sandbox scene. One child will need to make a round circle face and a crown to glue on a stick as King David. One child will need to make a round circle face and long hair to glue on a stick as Absalom. One child will need to make a green circle to glue on his stick to represent a tree. One child will need to cut out a four-legged creature to glue on his stick to represent a donkey. This child will probably need a pattern and help) The rest of the children will cut out round circle faces and glue them on their sticks to represent soldiers in King David's army and followers of Absalom. When the stick puppets are ready, tell the story instructing the children to add their puppet to the sand scene at the appropriate time. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - MOTHER/FATHER SAYS (auditory and kinesthetic activity) Materials needed: None WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: This game is a spin off from Simon says. Line all the children up in a horizontal line several feet away from you and from each other. Tell the children you are going to give them some orders, things you want them to do. They should obey and do them IF they hear you say mother says or father says. They should not obey and do them if they do not hear you say that. If they make a mistake, laugh and talk about it together, but don't make them leave the game. The purpose is to learn not to win. 1. Mother says pretend you're brushing your teeth. 2. Father says pretend your sweeping his garage. 3. Pretend your drying the dishes with a towel. 4. Father says pretend to put your seat belt on. 5. Look for something lost. 6. Mother says pretend you're shaking the rugs 7. Mother says pretend you're emptying the trash 8. Pretend you're vacuuming the rug. 9. Father says, say "thank-you". 10. Mother says, say "please". 11. Father says tie your shoes 12. Go sit down in your chairs. Jesus wants us to honor our fathers and mothers. That means to love and obey them. ACTING ON SCRIPTURE - ARTIST'S CORNER (A visual activity) Materials needed: 1 sheet of white paper for each child Crayons, colored pencils or markers Bibles WHAT THE TEACHER DOES: (To prepare ahead) There are no advance preparations necessary WHAT THE CHILDREN DO: Give each child a sheet of plain white paper. Ask them to draw a picture showing them doing something this week to honor their parents (or whatever significant adult they live with). Show them in the Bible where the memory verse is found. When the pictures are all finished hold them up and repeat the memory verse together several times.
